prenatal vitamins?

Do I need to get a prescription for these? I started taking Folic acid the other day. We are not trying to conceive for at least another year but I want to get ready@

Re: prenatal vitamins?

Do the prescription ones from the doctor generally make you sick. We are going to start TTC by the end of this year and I have to make an appt with the gyno soon to start preparing. Should I just go to a GNC or get a script?

Re: prenatal vitamins?

I started taking prenatal vitamins that I had bought from a GNC a while before I saw my doctor. When I did see her, she said that it was fine if I kept taking what I had been taking, or get a prescription. I opted for the prescription and it does not make me sick. Before you conceive or in the trying months, it is just really important that you take folic acid.

If you are starting to take folic acid, I would say just go and get off the counter prenatal vitamins, so you can get in the habit of taking them. It has all the vitamins, so you can build your entire immune system, not just get enough folic acid.

I take prescription prenatals and yes they do make me a little nauseaus if I take them on an empty stomach. I prefer to take mine with a meal.

I buy OTC prenatals at a health food store. Rx is good with insurance!

Heard they were cheaper at GNC too

Re: prenatal vitamins?

I just heard that a few girls got sick from their prenatals so once I found ones that worked for me I stuck with them. I didn't mean to infer that lots of women get sick on them at all.
they probably cost me the same or a bit less than RX ones though.

Re: prenatal vitamins?

FYI, never take prenatals with orange juice. I did that and it was the one and only time I threw up while I was pg. It was an instantaneous reaction too. My OB said they do not mix well with OJ (yeah, no kidding!)

Re: prenatal vitamins?

I got a prescription the last time I visited my OBGYN and it was much cheaper than OTC. Mine are Prenate and if I take them with food they don't make me sick.

I took Materna, and I did have a little bit of naseau during the first couple of days I took them. But, I simply changed the time of day that I took my vitamin and everything was fine.

Just FYI - for those taking OTC prenatals - check w/your doctor b/c you may need to supplement your OTC prenatal w/one or two other vitamins/minerals that are vital to development of a healthy baby.

Re: prenatal vitamins?

how far in advanced should you start taking prenatal vitamins?

Re: prenatal vitamins?

do the pre-natal vitamins have enough folic acid in them or do you need to take it in addition to the vitamins?

LizD Posted:

Re: prenatal vitamins?

just bumping to find out about the folic acid

Re: prenatal vitamins?

i believe they have enough...

Re: prenatal vitamins?

Liz ... the prenatals should have enough folic acid w/o needing an additional supplement unless you are at risk for birth defect. If you're not, the Rx will be fine!

I started my prenatals a few months b/f TTC ... Jenn, the earlier the better!
