Prenups..costs,validity etc

Hi all

I have been much of a lurker on this board for a while now and have received lots of valuable info. Thanks.

I am a future groom (yes! I read the bride-helping-bride forums a lot!) who has met the girl of my life.

I am looking into getting a prenup for various sound reasons which I wont bore you with here. I am trying to minimize expenses as I hear that lawyers charge a lot for this service. I see there are online services that can help prepare a good prenup for a nominal cost (such as legalzoom.com, findlaw etc). I heard rumors that prenups are not valid unless both parties consult attorneys .... which brings up the expense issue again.

If the prenup is signed in front of witnesses and notary public - wouldnt that make it completely valid?

Anyone have experiences with costs of prenups? Did you both have to consult your own lawyer? Would it cheaper to have a proposal already drawn up and then present it to the attorney for 'finalization'?

Any info would be appreciated. thanks!

welcome to LIW and congrats.

I'm just curious about something... if you're in a financial situation that requires you to secure a prenuptial agreement, why are you concerned with lawyer fees?

from what I have heard, your future wife would and should consult her attorney to ensure that the agreement is fair to her.

If you don't consult with attorneys, sign a prenup, and the marriage ends, your FW could claim she did not understand what she was signing. This could affect the validity of the prenup. Hopefully you'll never have to use it, but if you do, it's better to do everything 'by the book' to ensure the prenup will be valid. If you have assets worth protecting, IMO it's beneficial to spend the $ to ensure the prenup is valid. Otherwise, what's the point of even having one?

Get lawyers. If the issues are not complex then the cost is not going to be a lot. FM i am an attorney and I have names of people that are not too expensive. you can pay by credit card. Good luck..... dont do these important things on line
