Prescribing steriods to babies

My niece Jazmyne is 8 months old and is having respiratory problems, she is on a nebulizer(sp) and has scarring. She was just prescribed steroids for a year. My bil and sil live in Michigan, they are in the military, and I am unsure of the pediatricians backround. Isn't that a bit much? to be on them for a year? I told my DH I would get a second opinion, but he does not think it is our place to question BIL, he is probably right, I just want to know the severity of being on them for a yr. When I was 12, I was on them for 3 months, and I have weak teeth now.. TIA

I have heard steriods being prescribed for that age, but giving a year without follow up and re-evaluatin seems strange. I would think she would be seen for a follow up every months or so, especially since she is so young.
