Price of Remodeling Kitchen?

I would really like to remodel my kitchen but don't know how much the approximate cost would be. It is a basic 10 x 10 kitchen. I have looked at Home Depot and Consumers Kitchens and Baths and they seem pretty cheap but everyone tells me that it will cost $20,000! Is that true?

My bf just did her REALLY REALLY small kitchen and she and her hubby did a lot of the work themselves and it still cost them 9k

$20,000 is about right. It really depends on what you want to do.

I thought it was a lot more than that.
From what I was told, take the price of the cabinets, and double it...that's the approx. price of having a contractor to remodel your kitchen. I could be totally wrong on this...but I thought this was what I heard (we were lucky, our friend remodeled ours...but the cabinets were $26,000, and then the granite was $8,000)

it depends on the cabinets that you pick and how big your kitchen is. i also think a big factor should be if you plan on staying there for 50 years or reselling it in 5 years.if reselling selling it i would go for a less elborate kitchen something that is functional and pretty and looks good for resale. a good installer can make a less expensive kicthen look almost as good as a more expensive one in a lot of cases. if you did it your self depending on the size of the kitchen, home depot sells mills pride cabinets stock that you can pick up and bring home your self and wont have to wait the 4-6 weeks when you special order them. there are plenty of contractors out there that give great prices if you need some names let me know

Thanks everyone! We just came home from Home Depot and the salesman gave me an idea of how much cabinets would be. One of my sister's neighbors would be able to install and I know an electrician for lights. We just now need MONEY!! Last year I was hoping we could use our raise money but I didn't get much so we didn't have much left over. We are crossing our fingers for this year!

I think we spent about $9K at consumers for cabinets & granite ... then maybe $1200 on our appliances.

DH's brother installed the cabinets, etc ... comsumers did the granite.

I'm almost done with our kitchen remodel - we went middle of the line for everything - cabinets, appliances, etc. We didn't get the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. We did splurge on granite countertops. All together for materials & contractor costs we're going to end up around $20k. When we started the process, we thought we'd be spending $10k, but it just keeps adding up.
