Priest question

Priest question

Hey ladies...so let me preface this first. FH and i are planning on having the ceremony at the RH but since FH is still kinda religious, he'd like to have a priest as the officiant. But when we went to check out RH's this weekend, we were told by a bunch of them that a priest won't go outside of the catholic church to marry you...does anyone know the specifics/stipulations on this one? Would a minister be our only (closest) option or does anyone know of priests that will do this? (note: we're prob getting married in nassau county, if that makes any difference)

thats correct a catholic priest must be performed inside a church, does your church have a deacon you can check with him to see if he will marry you, but i dont think they will perform a wedding outside a church either.

Well we live in NC now, so we don't actually have a NY church per se. I know FH was thinking of maybe asking a priest from his grandmother's church, like maybe if the priest knows someone in the family, he could help us out...or would that still be on the forbidden list?

i think its still on the forbidden list, this is one rule i dont htink a priest will bend on. To them they want you married in the eyes of god and thats the church. Thats exactly what we where told when we where in pre cana. Sometimes if you look online at offiants, you can find someone to perform somewhat of a religious cermony for you.

yes what they told you is true, a catholic priest wont marry outside the church. there may be some exception but im not aware of specifics if so. that being said, there is an order of married catholic priests (C.I.T.I), who of course the RC church no longer associates with, but they will officiate at any RH. Rev Michael Callahan is one. Rev. Thomas McCormick is another. Here are their websites if this is something youre interested in.

Re: Priest question

catholics dont recognize your marriage unless its in the church so bc of that rule a priest cant perform your ceremony at a different location, this is one thing they wont do. There are retired priests who do perform ceremonies, but not sure if that would be enough for your FH

Maybe THAT's what my cousin did. I know my mom mentioned that one of my cousins in the past had had a priest and a rabbi both at their RH ceremony but couldn't figure out how that was possible when everyone's been saying priests can't perform ceremonies outside of the church...maybe they had a CITI priest. I'll definitely check it out, thanks!
