It seems like every photographer I like is $5000+ which is more than I wanted to spend. On the other hand, pictures are really important to me. Could I hire an awesome photographer and print the albums myself? My FH uses Photoshop every day for work, so he could do any retouching, but I don't want a cheap looking album either. Thoughts? Anyone every do this? Thanks!

Re: printing my own album?
That is an insane price...I have found lots of photographers for under 2k. Keep looking around....check out Thomas Paul or fade to black.
Even if you get the cd with all rights you can print the pictures from that and create your own album. At least all the pictures will be retouched

I'm getting video and photography for around that price... including albums (upgraded), parents albums, proofs, etc.
Check out North Island Photography. Othewrwise, you can have some do photographs and then make an albums on shutterfly, mixbook, etc.... but it depends on how much it means to you to get pictures a certain style.

Okay why is it that one of the photographers I like charges $1900 for a 12x12 album and Shutterfly charges $70 (both leather bound). What is the studio providing Shutterfly isn't, because that is a HUGE difference!

You just have to keep looking. Check out Unique Visions Studio (located in Ozone Park). I am going with a package that includes one 12x12 album and two smaller parent albums, as well as the digital retouched CD of 500 images (at minimum), 2 photographers for 10 hrs AND e-pics!
If you want more info, FM me.
And I meant to say that the entire package is under $4k.

WOW.. I really don't know what photographer you are planning on using.. but that is a rip off. We are paying'
- 3K for full day (about 12hours of service). - Engagement photo session. - Our large album - 2 smaller parent albums - As many thank you cards as we need - 1 photo printed for each bridal party member. - 1-20' print and 2 other large prints.
Our photographer is GREAT!! Our e-pics look awesome!
If you are set on using this photographer you got a price from, I would DEF not get the album from them!! I am a graphic designer and plan to make my own album anyway and print through a web-printer also.

Re: printing my own album?
i printed my album through picaboo ... it cost $150, but i had gotten a groupon which was $100 credit (paid $35 for it), so that was good
i really love the way my album came out ... but be prepared to spend HOURS on creating it ... i worked on mine every night for at least 2 hours for two or three weeks!!!
ETA: you acn buy cheaper albums ... i just chose one that had lay-flat pages and a leather cover.

Some photographers have a business model where you're really paying for their images rather than their time. They're typically the ones who won't release all of the digital files to you right away (so you can't make your own album). When the photographer makes your album, you're also paying for design work. And it's higher quality than shutterfly. Here's more info about different albums, layouts, and covers.
You can also get albums made through A La Carte Albums (link)
wow thank you

Our photographer is printing a bunch for us, and then whatever else I want printed I'll do online, shutterfly, kodak, etc.

Re: printing my own album?
I would suggest shopping around more. I don't know what photography style you prefer but I'd look into North Island Photo, LoveMore Photo, Duet, Dream, or Jadore Love perhaps.
I first thought of doing our own albums to save money but then we received a quote including album from a photographer we clicked with and jumped on it. To make your own will require alot of time and dedication.

Re: printing my own album?
THERE ARE 2 PLACES THAT I'VE USED & THEY DO GREAT WORK!!!!
ePixel in Elmont- I've used them a lot more
and the other place
labgrafix in West Hempstead
We were considering doing this until we found Thomas Paul and the price he gave us wold been the close to me doing myself, plus all the added work changed my mind.
Edited* i should mention, ePixel we've gotten the canvas printed pictures from them and they came out gorgeous! They also edited our X-mas cards, after I even edited them- and they came out even better!

I made my own on Shutterfly. Its a 12x12 leather cover, 80 something page book. It came out great and saved me a ton of money!!!
