What is your opinion? Are there any benfits to keeping your dress at salon and getting alterations there..or is it better to go sompleace private? Has anyone ever thought of the advantages/diosadvantages to doing this?

I have a steamstress I love but I am doing my alterations at the salon. I just think it's better if they store the dress until the wedding. With a private person she's responsible for my dress and she doesn't necessarily have the space/security, etc. I'd honestly worry about her shop getting robbed, etc. With the bridal salon, they have security and if they lose the gown it's their fault and they can rush you a new one, if god forbid anything bad were to happen. A private seamstress you're kind of on your own. I know my seamstress has really limited storage space and it's not climate controlled etc. I'd rather just have that whole headache be on the part of the bridal salon until I pick it up and bring it home right before the wedding.

I think it depends on the salon you get your dress from... I've heard some salons overcharge for alterations or do anything possible to get you to the capped amount, so if you don't really need too much but suddenly they're telling you its $400 and you really just need your bustle then i'd consider going outside. In any case though IMO i feel staying and getting your alterations done at the salon where you bought your dress is jsut easy and it brings some sort of comfort level in case god forbid they mess something up you got the dress there so I mean they are liable!!

im having this problem now and there are def + and - to both. i got my dress at kleinfelds and decided i am not deciding on alterations until my dress comes in and i try it on in the store. the sample (when i ordered my dress) fit me almost perfectly (one size off) so hopefully when i try it on i will need VERY LITTLE to it done---- which if that is the case i will bring it to a local tailor (bc going to NYC each time is not fun and they charge a high amount i forgot the exact amount but would not be worth it for the little i need). when i try it on and something major needs to be done then i will stay with kleinfelds bc i want them to take responsibility in case something goes wrong. as soon as you bring more parties into the mix they will be quick to blame eachother if something goes wrong.
