PRK-lasik?

PRK-lasik?

So, I finally went to my eye doc appointment(took 6 months to get one) and he told me that I have blood vessels growing in my cornia. Ok, which is from wearing my contacts to much. He also told me that I should really consider getting PRK at my next base. They don't do it overseas. I was supposed to get it at my last base but it was too close till I left for Korea. My FH wants to wait till we are settled in our new place before I get it. He says its not like he doesn't want me to get it but I feel like he isn't on board with me! I support him in everything and anything he wants to do! Whether he wants to do it right away or in a little bit. Sorry just had this on my mind and has been bugging me.

I told him the AF will pay for the PRK, all we have to do is pay for travel and logding.

Is there a particular reason your eye doctor suggested PRK rather than LASIK? I was under the impression that PRK was an older technology and LASIK was more advanced? I had bladeless LASIK (LASEK) going on 3 years ago and I love the results. I've seen better than 20/20 ever since. I think you will be amazed at the results. I kind of understand what your fh is saying just because the down time is short most of the time but if something were to happen, I think it would be good to have him around more to help you.

No PRK is newer, no cutting into the eye like lasik. Plus the AF pays for PRK.

The military always suggest PRK because of the after affects and risks compare to Lasik. I dont know if it is still in effect but you are disqualified from being a pilot with Lasik.

I know PRK was out before lasik was. I did a lot of research but the AF qualification does make sense though. I know they have lots of regs for pilots.

Also I had bladeless surgery so my eye wasn't cut either, my corneas were too thin to be cut according to my eye doc. Either way good luck with your surgery.

That can happen from wearing contacts too much?!

That's scary because I wear contacts everyday!

yeah, When I was in high school, i wore them all the time, even fell asleep in them! It wasn't until 2 years ago I started to take better care of my eyes. It ***** cause it's a little too late.

just remember that PRK has a longer recovery period than Lasik. usually you need 1-2 weeks to recover from PRK and it can take up to a month for you vision to get to become stable. so i wouldn't plan on doing it now if your wedding is a month away.

My FH had the PRK done...gees, probably 6 or 7 years ago.
Yes, the PRK is when they actually scrap your cornea off and it growns back rather then cut it and flap it back (Sounds gross I know).
Anyway, he had to have this procedure done b/c he had thin corneas.
It is a longer and much more painful healing process. My FH has a huge tolerance for pain (He's in construction and has practically cut limbs off with out blinking an eye) but he was crawled up in pain for like 3 days after the surgery.
I hate to tell you this but on the other side he said it was 'The best thing he's ever done and doesnt regret it for a second' (After June 10, that better be the best thing he's ever done...heehee).
Good Luck

Oh my God! I should take myself to the eye doctor then because she has been concerned that now my eyes get incredibly dry (I work in front of a computer all day though), but I do want to get LASIK done some time...I don't know how much it costs though...

My fiance had lasik six months ago, he just went back in on Monday to get his right eye redone. His right eye fluctuated so much from day to day. When he went back again he had to do PRK. Much tougher recovery time, and fh was in a lot of pain last night. Personally I would wait til you are settled just in case something does go wrong. P.s. the recovery time is 5-7 days, but you can go to work the very next day.

Lasik and PRK cost about the same. They are both around $2,000- 2,500 per eye

I paid less than that. My doctor is in Manhattan.

My brother had it done, he is also military. He told me that day he was fine just sensitive to light, the next day, he couldn't see a damn thing! But he said it just gets better with time. Yes PRK does take longer but there are less chances of error. Lasik they actually cut into your eye.

I can't get it done till I'm stateside anyways. I'll be in Korea till May 07. So nothing done before the wedding! The good thing about the military is that I'll be put on quarters so I don't have to go to work for about a week. Thank goodness!

Who is your doctor? Do you mind recommending? FM me since I am in the city and it would probably work out better seeing someone here too.
