Problem...

Problem...

I have a problem and I don't know what to do. After finally getting my e-ring appraised, I sent away to my insurance company to get it insured. They asked for the GIA certification and appraisal. We sent it in, and expected it to be insured.
Today I come home from work and I have a letter from State Farm saying basically that they can't insure the ring because there is a chip in it, and they don't insure chipped gemstones. Apparently there is a chip in the stone, as per the GIA certificate.
My ring needs to be insured. I am terrified of losing it or something happening.
Has anyone ever heard of this? Where do I go now and how do I get this insured? I'm kind of upset.
TIA

Re: Problem...

So I had this all typed out and somehow I got logged out of LIW

So ANYWAY, as I was saying, try some different companies. Make some phone calls, you should be able to get quotes over the phone, it might just take some time to compariso shop. Now that you know the chip was an issue, mention it while you're asking about the quote.I used All State even though I have my car insurance through another company, opened a renter's policy and added my ring as a ryder. Igot a really good rate.

Also, try and use a local agent if you can, All State's central customer service was of no help but my agent was great

I've also heard great things about Jeweler's Mutual. I'd imagine they'd be the most understanding about a ring with a chip that's accounted for int he GIA certification

Weird though, I've never heard that a chipped diamond would be hard to insure. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Problem...

Thank you Jamie.
I opened it and my mouth dropped. I have car insurance with them, my mother has about 20 different insurance policies with them she told me, and she is fuming right now. She told me she is going to call them up tomorrow and give them a piece of her mind.
The chip is in the GIA report, its not like it was done after. I have never heard such a thing in my life. Even though it has a chip, it was a lot of money! I need it insured. FH didn't even know it had a chip and hes mad too.

umm...when i got my ring insured they didn't ask for the cert...so if it had had a chip they would have never known....try another company?

Re: Problem...

Never heard of that (though I never insured jewelry before either) but I agree try another company. To me it's seems strange they are replacing the value of the item so what does a chip have to do with it anyway?

I have Jeweler's mutual insurance and it's great... they let you have all different kinds of deductibles and once you get other jewelry you can add it to the policy (bands, etc.) HTH!

Re: Problem...

I was thinking the same thing, they are just insuring the value, but they actually sent me a letter saying they are canceling my policy. So at one point I was insured, but then dropped? It was this whole typed letter to FH and I from state farm saying they do not cover chipped gemstones under their insurance riders. Weird. I pay my car insurance on time every 6 months. I just don't get it.
FH just said, So if I buy a car with a dent, do they not insure it?
Oh well.
Thank you for all of your suggestions!

Re: Problem...

Definitely look into Jeweler's Mutual. My e-ring is insured through them and I've never had any problems.
