problem with nipping

problem with nipping

My puppy is very sweet but he nips at us sometimes and bites our fingers. I think that he thinks that he is playing but sometimes it hurts and sometimes he will lunge for our faces, how can I get him to stop?

My breeder told me that when Bama does this, to yelp loudly like an injured dog, then ignore the puppy. Don't play with him or look at him. This works sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't, so we just give him a sharp, loud 'NO!' and he gets the point.

Chewie bites us all day long. Nothing has helped. Yelling 'no' doesn't work or yelping. Hes a terror! I hope he grows out of it.

maybe its a pug thing

It could be a teething thing. A really major step to take is called an 'alpha roll' where you take the dog (no smiling or yelling while doing this) and flip him onto his back and hold him there. You are supposed to hold their muzzle closed for a few seconds too but on a pug

Basically this action is kind of what the mother or leader of the pack would do to the puppy if they were in the wild.

I will try this but Chewie is basicaly muzzleless.

I wanted to just add that the alpha roll thing is an extreme thing, first just be consistent on when the puppy nips, you say no in an authority voice and immediately stick one of his toys in its mouth. Supposedly if you do this everytime, they will learn what it bite-able and what is not.

You can also give them something to chew on, like a nylabone or a greenie.

My Tortellini does the same thing, he always nips and bites our fingers and feet. We have tried everything from chew toys to timeout to blowing a whistle we even had a trainer come over for a few hours. He is still nipping though.
