Is it OK to invite guests to just attend church and not reception? If so how do you go about this? We are on a tight budget but want to try to include as many of our friends as possible.

Re: proper invite ettiquette
IMHO
I don't think it is appropriate to invite people to attend a wedding and not open up the reception to them.
There may be people who are uninvited but decide to attend the ceremony. But that is of their own accord and not your concern. But it is flattering when they do that.

IMO you can't send an invite for just the church and not the reception. What I did was, for example, people at work: I work with MANY people, and could not invite everyone, so I sent an e-mail to everyone and titled it 'see us get married' and wrote 'if i had all of the money in the world, I would have invited every single one of you to my wedding. I am so blessed to work with all of you. I would love for you to see us get married in church, blah blah blah' and people felt really good to be invited to the church at least. People understand that times are tough, and weddings are expensive.

I wouldn't. If people want to come to the church that aren't invited to the wedding, they'll go on their own accord.

I agree...you can't really invite people to the church and not the reception. I've seen teachers do this with their students, but obviously you wouldn't be expected invite 20 8-year-olds to your reception!!

Re: proper invite ettiquette
I know that people do it, but I don't like it. I just put myself into that person's shoes. I would think, ok she wants as many people as possible to be there for her when she walks down the aisle but doesn't like me enough to shell out for my plate at her reception. I would not go to the ceremony if I were that persoan. I would never want anyone to think that about me so I would persoanlly never do it.

I don't think thats a good idea. Invite whoever you can to the reception. If people are not invited, they might just come to the church anyway to wish you well.....this is usually what I do, if I'm not invited but would like to see the bride, I stop by the church to offer a congrats.
