Prostate Cancer Help

Prostate Cancer Help

My dad was just diagnosed yesterday.
He still has to go and get a cat scan and a bone density exam. The doctor is calling to make those appointments for him today.
They let him know that depending on what they find (we are hoping it just developed because he was tested 6 months ago and he was fine) that he might have to go for radiation, for 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

Can anyone tell me what I can expect with my dad? I know every case is different, but will the radiation really knock him out? will he be able to work? what type of prognosis can i expect?

I really appreciate any help/suggestions/comments - i'm devastated right now.

I'm so sorry about your dad...sending you lots of prayers your way! As for the radiation, I know that when my uncle was going for radiation he would just get really tired and run down. I hope everything turns out well.

What I know about prostate cancer is that it's one of the most treatable forms of cancer if caught early and it sounds as if it was caught early for your father. I know it's still scary. I'll keep him in my prayers.

Aww I'm soooooooo sorry about your dad!!!! I'll keep you in my prayers. I only have experience with breast cancer and she had chemo so I'm not sure what you'll expect with radiation. Good luck, I'll be praying for your father's quick recovery!!!

It is definitely the most treatable form. My Dad was diagnosed last year, like the week after I got engaged. He had the most minimal amount, it had just started. He did not go through radiation, he had an operation that removed it, and I am happy to say since Sept 2011 he has been cancer free. It's a very emotionally draining thing, when a parent is sick. (I lost my mom at an early age to Cancer) Hang in there, and just remember, to breathe and not panic. I will keep your dad in my thoughts as well.

Sorry to hear that If he was tested 6 months ago and was clear that is def a good sign! Im sure he will be fine! Honestly from personal experience radiation knocked me out more than expected but I still continued to work. I had radiation on my neck not sure about the side effects of radiation on the prostate. Just tell him to take it easy he prob will not feel that great but once it is over and they get rid of it he will feel like a million bucks. I truely believe positive thinking on his and everyones part is the best medicine. Just know that he will get better but may just have to deal with some s*it along the way! Hoping for a speedy recovery for your dad

So sorry to hear this. Sending good thoughts and prayers. I'm not too familiar with prostate cancer, but my sister is a colon cancer survivor and the best advice I have for you is to remain positive - its always devastating to hear, but there is so much they can do for him and so many advances in the medical field now. Just be there for him and encourage and shower him with love :)

I'm sorry to hear that as well. It definitely is one of the most curable forms of cancer. FH's father was diagnosed about a year ago, and is in total remission now, he was diagnosed, then went for all testing, and then had surgery to remove it and everything has been great since then.

Keep your head up, of course no cancer is good cancer, but this is very treatable. xo

Well I m sorry to hear that and I will pray for your father and family. Prostate is one of the most curable cancers when caught n the earliest stage which it sounds like it is in your fathers case. There are many different treatments depending on the stage. Surgery, radiation, combination of both, and they also plant seeds which is a type of radiation. Everyone is different on how they react to treatment and it also depends on the strength of the treatment. I would say he will most likely be tired. I don't now if this helps but if you have any questions fm me I have had family members with prostate cancer that are now cancer free and I am a nurse.

i'm sorry to hear about this, but it sounds like they caught it early which is good. my grandfather had prostate cancer 2 years ago and did seeding and is fine now. my FFIL just finished his 9 week treatment of radiation everyday. he never complained or had any serious side effects just had to watch what he ate bc somethings made his stomach upset. My advice would be to support him fully and know that this is one of the more treatable cancers. Good Luck and I'm sure things will be fine.
