public schools

FH and i want to buy a house in about 4 years. I want to keep an eye on the real estate market though. What public school districts are the good ones in nassau County? I heard Syosset was good, but Im sure there are more. Also, which ones are good in western Suffolk? I just can't imagine paying $15,000 and more a year for private schools!

there are lots of great school districts out there, you can look on greatschools.net.

lol I had a thought- yeah you might not want to pay $15K a year for private school tuition but if you lived in syosset SD you'd probably paying close to that in taxes~~

Haha good point about the taxes!!

This is so hard for me comming from Maine. I don't know about any of teh schools! And nassau seems to have beautiful areas but then within that town is a not so great area. For example I told FH I liked Westbury, but he said while its such a nice town, the school isn't as good as you would think- so we would be sending our kids to private school.

Rockville Centre has a great school reputation. Oceanside is ok but it was better in the past.

PS. When I was graduating from HS in Oceanside it was great but it has gone downhill a little. I don't know how it is now its good I know that but I don't know if its still great (I hope I explained that correctly). I live in Rockville Centre and they have great schools. I lived on the border so Oceanside's elementary school was closer that the Rockville Centre's elementary school but at that time you couldn't go wrong with either one of them.

Re: public schools

I live on the south shore and pretty much any town from merrick - massapequa (merrick, bellmore, wantagh, seaford, massapequa) are all VERY good districts. All of the towns in this area are very close knit, education driven, involved etc.

Jericcho is great also ... good luck!!!

I second RVC and Massapequa. They are great school districts. I went to Lynbrook and it used to be good, but I've heard its really gone downhill.

Jericho is ranked as one of the top 30 schools in the nation. Great Neck South is also part of that list.

Re: public schools

Great Neck, Cold Spring Harbor, Jericho, Sysosset, Hewlett (any of the 5 Towns Schools), Wantagh, Massapequa, Dix Hills, Garden City, Commack....those are some of the good schools. You can actually do a search on google- type in the town name, school district and report card and the new york ed. site will come up with the statistics on the district- test scores, size of district, ethnicity, etc.

Newsday just came out with the % of kids passing from each elementry and middle school in nassau and suffolk in their paper this week. Check that out.

Re: public schools

Just don't be fooled by the report cards online... some districts have a much higher % of disabled students who are required to meet the same standards. Most of them don't. So when they take the tests they receive lower grades and they are averaged in with the rest of the school. That's why some schools have bad reps. Talk to people in the district.
