Puerto Rico is not a State. There is lots of debate over this. They are a commonwealth.

That means they are self-governing but are associated with the US.

Lots of people thing that the people of Puerto Rico need to decide what they want and to do it soon.

Hope this helps.

I THINK it's its own country, but also a commonwealth of the US. Pretty sure it's definitely is own country. But DEFINITELY NOT a state. I'm sure you will hear A LOT about it in the news if it ever becomes a state. I mean, think of all those flags we'd need to change

Re: Puerto Rico???

It has a govenor and has elected officials that are in Washington. They cannot vote, but they do have our welfare and other social reforms. They are self governing to some extent but must abide by our laws.

There have been several votes on whether or not they are to become a state and the Puerto Rican people have voted it down.

To make you go according to my students- Cuba is a commonwealth of the US and Spain is an island next to Puerto Rico and New Mexico is part of Mexico and not a state!
