Pulling my hair out over Videographer issue

Pulling my hair out over Videographer issue

Ive been going back and forth about this for over a year now.......to get a videographer or not to get a videographer??!!!!!

The situation is, my parents always kinda poo-poo'd it saying it was a waste of money, they say spend the X amount of dollars on something else like your honeymoon, and just have 'someone' at the wedding whos invited record the ceremony and reception for you. (My question is, who in the world that is invited wants to be responsible for that half the night....shouldnt they be able to enjoy themselves?! I couldnt ask anyone for that responsibility!!)

At the same token, sadly enough, the cheapest packages I could find for simple basic coverage for the wedding and ceremony is about 1000....thats a lot of $$ for us, even that...for video...but Im afraid Im going to regret if I dont get it !

I wish I did know someone who would take my camcorder and just record b/c I know how to do video editing and all that (I do it for my job) so in a way, I think my parents are just thinking...oh, she can take what whatever the family records and edit it into her own...but thats a lot of work , and a lot of hours....... if I tell my parents I think we should hire one....they're gonna look at me like Im crazy and just wasting my money and getting Bridezilla fever.......

Okay I just had to vent!! Sorry My wedding is in 10 weeks and Im stressing. Its the only vendor I havent decided on.......

Can you get a relative or friend to record the wedding? or maybe contact a local university and ask for some communcation or film majors to record for you?

check craigs list, film students might do it for very little to be able to put it in their portfolio...on the knot, one girl got a 2nd photographer for free bc she was a film student and was happy to be able to be given the opportunity so this way she can have some experience on her resume

good points. I have to check that out. On the realtive side of things, I just feel weird you know asking someone, like 'hey your invited to my wedding, but instead of enjoying yourself and relaxing, can you video tape the ceremony and reception?! No pressure, but you're the only one doing it' LOL I'd feel so bad asking......

i know exactly what you mean, it is awkward...but there are some ppl who love doing this and wouldn't mind at all...the ceremony wouldn't be a big deal to videotape so you can ask someone to do that...the reception is a bit different bc thats when ppl eat, drink and want to dance

Re: Pulling my hair out over Videographer issue

My sister got married in 1991 and had a video. A few years ago my mother watched it again and mentioned how many people in the video had since passed away and how it was wonderful to have them captured on film like that. You could hear them and see them as they were and how special that is for my sister. Both of my parents have passed away in the last 4 years and they are now added to the list and it really is great to have that to look at whenever you want to (especially since they won't be able to be at mine). I don't think you need fancy edited footage, but if you want a video, I don't think it's a frivolous purchase at all. Maybe explaining it like this to your parents will help them understand why you would like it. Do you think maybe a video student from a college would do it for cheaper than a big professional place? Just a suggestion. Good luck in your decision!

i'm in the same situation. we were so against video, thinking we'll never watch it, but now that it's close, i'm afraid we'll regret it if we don't do it. it's an expense we weren't anticipating, but i'm afraid that if we dont' do it, ,we'll really regret it. and there's no one who's invited who would want to video everything, or they'll video what they think is important, not what we think is important. i need to check out craigslist! i'll gladly feed a starving film major for cheap video

I hear ya, I had a hard time deciding on getting a videographer and how much to spend, it's not worth all the $ most vendors charge... how about looking into local colleges some video students may have to do a project? That way it will be a step up from wedding guest and have some professional editing? Just a thought, good luck!

Hopefully that works out because then you get the best of both worlds-a video for the future without breaking the bank now.
