I really love trying this...but every year I fail miserably and wind up with a heap of orange goo on the table, and a pumpkin that smells like a$$ and looks like someone stepped on it.

I carved pumpkins last year for FMIL's 50th birthday party (b-day is Halloween)
they came out really nice and i got a lot of compliments. I think i have pics at home. I also carved one to say 'Happy 50th'
Gotta do it againt this year!!! Fun, but its hard on the hands.

Re: Pumpkin Carving
Stef, got some back issues of Martha from Jenny, she is going to try this year I think. I usually just get the really tiny pumpkins and draw eyes on them

Those are cool. We get those templates that you put over the pumpkins, and carve them. They come our AWESOME

Re: Pumpkin Carving
Last year I carved two pumpkins for my DH's Halloween party. I used the templates, too, and they came out amazing! (If I say so myself). I might have a picture somewhere, but everythings packed away now.
I've also done the designs where instead of cutting out the picture, you just scrape away part of the rind of the pumpkin. They come out great, too, and last much longer than when you cut the pumpkin through.
Edited for spelling.

Re: Pumpkin Carving
I love to carve pumpkins...but I don't think I can get that fancy...I usually just do the boring triangle eyes and nose...and then cut out some teeth.

Re: Pumpkin Carving
KMC: What do you use to carve out the flesh (but not all the way thru) on the pumkins. I know Martha suggests using a linoleum cutter but i have no idea where to buy one. The hardware store though i was nuts for asking for one

Re: Pumpkin Carving
Stef could you use an exacto knife? - Figures Martha would send you on a wild goose chase...she always loses me when she requires something NOBODY has ever heard of......

Re: Pumpkin Carving
Jen: the thing im looking for is this scrapper thing...not sure how to describe it but its like a very small, narrow spoon that will scoop small amounts of the skin away without cutting thru the other side. An exacto knife would cut right thru.

Re: Pumpkin Carving
the carving kits usually come with a scooper... or are you looking for something different? (and a little more 'professional')
ETS- to cut the OUTSIDE of the pumpkin? ( i was thinking of the inside)

Re: Pumpkin Carving
Yea Stef the cutter set I have has like a little mini 'saw' and knife etc.
I have always used a regular spoon (an old one you may bend) to get the insides out.
