When you look/were looking, what resources did you use besides a realtor. How did you find out what towns were better than others in the Long Island area. i.e. neighborhoods, school districts... We will probably head out to Suffolk but I have no idea how to begin narrowing down the towns and the districts. Thanks.

I pretty much knew all the towns I was looking in. I think word-of-mouth is very valuable. There are websites on which you can get full reports on the school districts but I'm not sure what they are. The multiple listing website (www.mlsli.com) has community statistics that will tell you crime rate, school district rating, etc.

I think on Century 21 they have a link to see neighborhood stats and stuff. That might be helpful. When we were looking I went on recommendations by friends and family.

I live in Suffolk and can probably tell you about some of the areas you may be interested in. I used mlsli.com to search for homes, it was the BEST resource. I just recently looked in Hauppauge, Nesconset, Smithtown, St James, Kings Park, Lake Grove, Dix Hills and East Northport.
