purpose of engagment shoot

what is the purpose? what if you've already been engaged over a year and you're not having an engagement party? do we need them?

to get use to your wedding photographer and make sure you feel comfortable with him and like his work....

It's for the photographer to become familiar with you in front of the camera. To get to know your best angles, so that you become familiar with his methods . . . etc. . . .

Plus it gives you some nice pictures for the guest books, sign-in boards, programs, etc.

weh ave been engaged for over a year and are getting them done for a few reasons

A- its included (although if we didnt want them i could have gotten him to subsititute something else)

B- we then get to have good pictures of us in every day clothes...not wedding clothes...we thought that would be nice too

C- he will let us have FIONA (our pup) in our pics :)

basically to get to know the photographers style - to get a few of his/ her pictures ahead of time to make sure they are the right ones for you - i enclosed wallet sizes in my save the dates for my older relatives ( in case they didnt remember my name and to give them a preview of us)
hope that helps

Re: purpose of engagment shoot

It rained my wedding day and we had very limited time to run out and get photos. Because we had done engagement photos - we knew what to do immediately and knew how she would want us to stand. Because we had gotten the photos from the engagement session back - we knew what kind of poses we liked too.
i wouldn't say it is essential but it is helpful
Plus - the photos are a lot more casual and fun so you may like them better than your wedding photos
