Q of the D

Original post by Toucan311

If you were pregnant and found out through a test that your unborn child had a serious illness (either physical or mental) what would you do?

I thought about this question b/c I overheard two girls in my office talking. Both of their child have disabilities (of varying degrees) and they were both just saying how life NOW is not at all how they envisioned/hoped it would be when they found out they were pregnant. It made me think!

im not sure what i would do in that situation but i am pro choice - i think that there are a lot of factors and even things like money might come into play - certain disabilities can end up costing families thousands and thousands of dollars (my cousin died at 3, she had severe disabilities and its really expensive - medications, specialists, therapy, special furniture, medical supplies, etc.) i'd also be sure to consider my other children (if we already had any) because having a severly handicapped child may take away from our other children - and id have to consider my relationship with my husband - its not easy and would certainly put a strain on the marriage....i think id lean toward termination depending on the severity - just being honest - but who knows - i could have a change of heart if faced with the decision....

We would cross that bridge if we ever got to it. So, I dunno...

I do not think anyone could answer that question until you are faced with such a decision. I am personally pro choice and thankful that I have never had to choose but happier knowing the option is there for those women faced with such a difficult decision.

what makes me sad is that a lot of times these children end up going into homes because at some point because their parents cannot take care of them anymore - especially when the child becomes an adult and the parent is older ive seen severely autistic kids go into homes because their parents couldnt control them physically it really breaks my heart - i dont know what i would do - i give the parents of special needs children so so so much credit

I have two children and with both of them I had an amniocentesis they test the DNA for any genetic problems- waiting for 2 weeks for results was a life time- thank god both are fine!!! I have been on both sides my SIL has a very disable child who now is almost 18 and I see the stress this has caused on her physical, and emotional- at my age I hate to say that I dont think I could go to term with the child knowing what was wrong-I also know about losing a child ihave had two miscarriages in the last 18 months- I admit it is a tough choice and both way there is a loss with this question.

I think for me .....if I was terminating the pregnancy ONLY b/c it would be a hardship on me and DH b/c the child requires extra care for the rest of their lives....then I think I would be doing the wrong thing, and I would feel guilty and selfish.

However, if it was a matter where the child would not be able to sustain any kind of joy or peace in their life b/c they would be in constant pain and discomfort....then I could see me terminating it. Either way it just goes to show you how huge of a responsibility getting pregnant really is.
