If you were pregnant and found out through a test that your unborn child had a serious illness (either physical or mental) what would you do?

Whoa. That's a toughie.
I think it depends on what disease / illness. . .while I would consider myself pro-life, I think that if it is something where they wouldn't be able to lead a normal happy life I would have to think carefully about it and how fair it would be to them.
I hope this conversation doesn't get out of control. . .

me too. we had a simliar topic on the NW board a few weeks back--it got ugly.
honestly, i'm not sure what i would do. i think that is one of those things that you can't know how you'd feel, until it happens.

Exactly - its one of those things I can't even fathom until I was in the same situation.
People get pretty opinionated about choices like this, so I could only imagine how it turned out on another board

Ok this is a very difficult question to answer and by no means do I hope to offend anyone...this is all personal opinion...but it would really depend. If I was told that my child would be born and die within days due to a serious illness I don't know that I could birth the child knowing I would lose the child. Now on the flip, I've never had a child, I have heard horror stories, most recently a friend first pregnancy, everything great, goes at 5 months for a check up and finds out the baby has an extremely rare disease and will probably not make it through the pregnancy...she is going to continue with the pregnancy because she wants the child to be as close to her as possible till the end. Now hearing this as well I feel like in that situation I might feel the same way. So I guess I really can't say...

Im going to get attacked for this but I wouldn't want to torture a child his/her entire life.. I wouldn't have it.
A friend went through this situation too.. It's a horrible decision to have to make.

Depending on the disease and nature of it. I would terminate it. For example if it was Autism, down syndrome, I would keep it. But something like spinabifida. I would terminate.

Re: Q of the D
this is a really hard question to answer and depends on so many things- like would the child be in constant pain and not ever able to function on its own... and also I dont know because I dont have kids, so its soo hard to say.

I would see what kind of illness it was...do some research, talk to the doctors!! This child was created out of love I would not end it's life! I am totally aganist that!! I would deal with the situation and love that child!

Re: Q of the D
ohh hard question heather...
i think it all depends especially since im not in that situation and never had a child
now working with children who have had all sorts of medical illness (life threatening and not) as well as other disabilities it is hard for me to say i would abort that pregnancy.
I just love working with those children and i feel they have everyy opportunity to live a life of happiness etc. However, I actually have never worked with a child that was diagnosed with a disease or illness before birth (besides down syndrome)- example: spina bifidea (where the child's spinal cord is growing outside their body)
now bec of technology that can be corrected, however a good amount of the times the child lives in a wheelchair or can have other problesm like mental retardation etc and maybe not even live that long
BUT...sorry for my rant haha I don't know if i would be able to terminate the pregnancy. I might if it was something serious as I might not make it through the pregnancy or the child will 99 % die at birth or sortly there after. My mom lost a child and she said it was the hardest thing in her life she ever experienced (he was 3 months) and not that it would be easier but i think i would rather give my child up early on in pregnancy then after it is born i feel in love and didnt want to let go.

This is a scary topic for me since I am anti-abortion. (I do feel its a womans choice so I dont judge anyone but I would never be able to do it) Having said that, I really dont know what I would do. Like some of the other girls said, it depends on the condition. If it was something where the child would be in constant pain or practically a vegetable its whole life, odds are I would terminate. It would affect me the rest of my life but I wouldnt be able to do it. This question gives me anxiety!

Re: Q of the D
it would depend on the disease, if it was something where the child would suffer and/or die a painful death because of the disease or only live a very short time i may consider not having it but if not i would have the baby and deal with whatever challenges are brought our way

This question is difficult to answer until you are in the situation. To be quite honest, I don't even want to THINK about it. I'm a firm believer that if it's meant to be, it will be. I'm not saying that a child is 'meant' to be sick, but if I found out that my unborn child could possibly be ill, I'd leave it in God's hands.

I depends on the severity, but if it was really serious i would terminate

WOW very hard question. I agree that it is a situation where you dont really know what you would do until you are in that situation. Like everyone else it would really depend on the condition. If my child would be in constant pain and suffer then that to me is just as bad and i would not want my child to suffer their whole life so it would be a very difficult decision. I am not hear to debate about how we feel about this so please ppl dont argue about whether i am right or wrong about how i feel but i am pro-choice, the thing is that Fh is pro-life so that would be another problem in the situation.

its hard to say unless you are in that situation but if it was a serious medical condition that would give the baby little to no quality of life I am pretty sure we would terminate.
if it was something in the middle like downs or autism i really dont know. probably lean more towards not terminating but it's so hard to say what you think you would do or what other people should do unless you are in the situation and REALLY have to make that choice.

Re: Q of the D
This is a very hard question and shakes me to the core of my beliefs. While I believe in a woman's right to choose, I personally have always thought i would choose to have the child. I believe that life starts at conception, but comepltely understand why women would choose abortion as an option.
It's hard to answer because I'm not in that situation and can only speculate. I would have to consider many factors, like the disease or illness of the child, their lifespan and quality of life, my lifespan (because who will take care of them once I'm gone). I'd also have to take a hard look at myself and ask myself if I think I could handle it. Some of us have the capabilty to handle things like these and other's of us don't and we have to be honest with ourselves when making a decision like this. After all those factors and self assessments are considered FH and I would make the decision. I believe it wouldn't just be my decision as the child would be ours and it would affect our marriage ultimately as well, so it would be a decision that both of us would have to make.
I do think if it a severe illness I would choose to terminate, taking into consideration everything i just said above.

personally, i feel i wouldn't be able to decide until faced with this situation. but speaking in the right now - i would tend to lean towards keeping the baby.
