How do you feel about the possiblity of making Spanish a 2nd official language of the US?

I personally don't care how many second languages there are as long as everyone knows English

that is my feeling. i dont think it should be accepted to come to this country and NEVER learn ENGLISH!! My FH's parents came from Romania and you bet their butt's they learned English---so I don't think it is fair for some to learn the English language and others not to. And we are AMERICA not SPANISH AMERICA. Sorry a touchy subject for me

Plus as an educator (soon to be) I do not feel I should HAVE to learn Spanish to communicate with my students. I am all for students being bilingual and speaking their 1st lang at home or where ever...but school there is no need. Plus I have had to deal with trying to collaborate with parents who cannot speak English and they use their children as a translator. I am sorry but another child should not do that for you. It makes them take on the roll of sort of the superior in a sense and i just don't agree with it.

I think that people should try to learn some Spanish, considering how common it is in the United States.

However, I also believe that if someone decides to move to the US, it is ultimately THEIR responsibility to learn English, since it was their decision to move to a country that spoke a different language.

I don't think Spanish should be a second language, I think that people living here should be encouraged to speak and learn English. Like I said, I think its good to learn other languages, but its unfair for someone that grew up here and has lived here their entire lives to suddenly have to learn Spanish so that its convenient for someone that made the decision to come to the US, but didn't make the decision to learn English.

Its JMO, I hope no one rails me for this!!!!

oh so yes...i do not think spanish should become the 2nd official lang of america.

and i am not sure if it will get more people talking because there are many people who will not learn spanish just bec it is the 2nd official language. i mean come on there are people who aren't learning english after years of being here.

I think learning a second language is wonderful and can earn you more money when job hunting but I do not think it should be mandated. No way.

look above haha i have the same reaction. except maybe mine is a little harsher haha...i feel the same way i shouldn't have to learn spanish so that it's convenient for someone else.

I feel at this rate English is going to soon be the 2nd language, and Spanish the first.
I would never go to another country and expect the people around me to learn MY language. If I made the decision to move to a foreign place, I'd have to assimilate (sp?) to that way of life.

I have plenty of family members who have come to this country from Italy and each and every one of them learned English. Why is it so hard for others?

Our nation was founded using English and thatshould be our official language - If a person has the opportunity or ability to be bilingual or more then great !

My father has a T-shirt that says: 'Welcome to America - NOW SPEAK ENGLISH!' I think that about sums it up for me

Exactly how I feel.. I'm jealous of those who know other languages. I think its awesome to be able to go to other countries and be able to speak the language. HOWEVER, it annoys me when I cant go shopping at some stores because they dont speak english.
