My parents came here from Italy and learned the language. IRONICALLY, they both also had to learn Spanish when they got jobs because they worked with many Hispanic people!

They have accents, but can communicate and my siblings and I speak perfect English.

I don't know - my parents didnt even finish HS and they were still able to pick up the language by without even taking any classes. . . so I don't understand why so many people don't make the effort.

ON THE OTHER HAND, when my mother starts talking and people hear an accent they just turn to me and ask ME to answer for her. Um, no - she speaks English have a little patience and maybe ask her to repeat what she was saying!!

One more thing tilde...I think you would appreciate this.

My mom's best friend is italian from Italy....they don't speak to each other in English..but they speak to each other in a combination of spanish and italian. Italish? Spalian?

Wow
I have a lot to say esp since my entire, I mean entire family, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, parents and sisters, husband, moved here from Poland - all ages from newborns, 8yr olds, teens, early 20's, my parents early 30's, grandparents in their 40/50's and hey guess what WE ALL HAD TO LEARN ENGLISH!
When I came to the US I was 7 yrs old, didn't know how to say anything in english besides Hi My name is Gabi. I lived in Glendale and unlike most polish immigrants my parents decided against living in a polish only neighborhood like greenpoint so we could learn english!!!!
My sister and I were the only 2 kids who spoke polish in my elementary school. & to all the people that think that everyone should speak spanish its bull. We had to struggle to learn.
So Do i think its fair for my sister who's a kindergarten teacher to have para's who are spanish speaking so the kids could have it easier - HELL NO!
Nobody I mean nobody understands wha't its like being an immigrant unless you went through it, kids make fun of you bc you dont understand them, bc you cant say what you want.

I remember walking into the bathrooms in school - maybe my second week in the US, and Im walking out & it was the boys bathroom. I didnt even understand BOYS BATHROOM / GIRLS BATHROOM.

So again I am strongly against having spanish as a 2nd language & it drives me up the wall when I call any place, whether it be my bank, my phone company, my cable company, and they say 'PARA ESPANOL MARCERO UNO''

ok vent over

oh ps: did i mention when my sister interviewed last summer, they didnt give her a job bc she didnt speak spanish??
Ummmm --- why didnt they have polish speaking teachers when we were struggling 15 yrs ago.

ITS AMERICA LEARN ENGLISH!
