Q on designer handbags

Original post by nifheim

Okay when I went away this weekend the gals and i were talking and trying to figure out the hierarchy of bags. Since we are very fashion challenged I said I can find out.

1) Hermes Birkin (who we never heard of until this weekend)
2) Fendi
3) Prada
4) Louis Vuitton
5) Coach
6) Dooney & Bourke

I know there are other designer bags but is this a good listing of bags that are designer, pricing and availability from the top?

I agree.. thats why on my list I showed big 'gaps'

I still consider Coach designer, but not a high-end designer. It is not in the same league as the other brands. I personally do not consider D&B designer at all -- i just think it's expensive for what it is, especially since it's targeted at tweens.

In the South, DB is bigger than Coach. Not the candy print DB, but the original leather DB's that are locked up behind the counter at Dillard's

Vera Bradley is also big in the south....

While I will give you the poor taste eye-roll of Vera Bradley, which is huge among teachers here (??? Who spends that on printed, quilted fabric) There is something genteel and classic about old school DB

Just saying....ya'll...

that's ridiculous Jen. What kind of females are you hanging out with that you discuss designer handbags?

Do you seriously want to memorize designers??? Or have a cheat sheet? (I know you don't).

yea this came across my mind, i guess its fun to talk about, but i dont think it should be the topic of conversation...maybe discussing which celebs carry which bags.

Nah i don't i was trying to make a joke and it went bad - SORRY hahah. I just feel like i am missing on something and that bothers me for some strange reason. I buy bags for the function and for what I like. If its a certain price then I won't buy it because I don't make that much - i rather spend the money on food for a month or vacation.

I just find myself now trying to have discussions with females at work and they talk about fashion and many talk about the new bags that are out and I feel so lost. I mean I don't seek approval from them but I do seek to speak to them since they are the ones to get me promotions IoI

Am I the only one who doesn't consider Coach or Dooney and Burke 'designer'?

I don't have either.. nor do I have a designer bag period... I just don't see these as designer because the brand is so commercialized...

No I agree with you.

I agree also. If wouldn't include coach or D&B in the same group as the others. The Birkins and LVs and Fendi spy bags are a world all their own.

Most of my knowledge about what bags are out there is from reading the gossip mags and seeing what bags the celebs are carrying. I don't even dream about owning any of them because to me, if I DID have that amount of money to spend on a bag, I sure as hell wouldn't be buying a bag (I'd be buying shoes, but that's a whoooole other thread!!! ).

Like you, I carry what's functional for me... I commute to the city everyday, so I need a bag that will carry a lot of my useless-to-most-people cr@p... my current bag... $25 bucks from NY & Co
