so FH and i were decorating our christmas tree after we went to FOCCUS so let's play off something we talked about...
what kind of Christmas family traditions are you hoping to bring to your marriage? Are you making new traditions with FH??
FH and i have a few family traditions that we are bringing together. spending certain days with certain families, doing secret santa. and we also decided on doing a new tradition with each other. we are going to make a picture ornament each year with the two of us, and as our family grows our children. and we'll have a 'christmas tree Photo album' that we will take of us in front of our tree and put it in. and as our kids get older we will pass it down to them to continue.

That's a very cute idea about the pictures...I will have to see if FH will want to do that with me! HA.
We have a few small traditions that we already started... just the basics. Like, we also help equally to decorate everything... I make my famous sugar cookies and he makes his yummy beer bread... we always bake an apple or cherry pie together to bring to our families, and it's one of the few times of the year that he actually spikes his hair rather then just gelling it foward.lol. And, hopefully, starting this year, we will rotate families...his on xmas eve, and mine on xmas...then the following year it'll switch...he's got a HUGE family, and I don't...so it's always hard to say we can't go to some of his families gathering...

Re: ....QOTD 12/09/08.....
Well already I am sharing one family tradition with fh, my mom made the whole family (cousins included) homemade knit stockings and this year fh is getting his own.
I am very odd about Christmas. My mom carries on most of the traditions of her mother and I think its important for me to do the same. Cookies for breakfast, a rotating Christmas tree with nothing but glass ornaments... there are so many traditions my family has.
But Christmas Eve is important to fh and his family so for now we go to NJ and go to his traditional Christmas Eve dinner with his extended family and mass. That works now, but it might not when we have kids. Although its hard because it ruins my familie's Christmas Eve tradition of going to a friends house for cocktails, then out to dinner and then driving all over the area to look at Christmas lights.

I love the idea with the pictures!! My family has a tradition that I hope to keep alive forever....every year on xmas eve the oldest man in the family dresses up as santa and we all get together in the living room and sing chirstmal carols until santa appears and hands out presents to everyone. We have been doing this for as long as I can remember and I look forward to it every year

We have a tradition in my family that on Christmas Eve my mother would let us open one present and it was always our Christmas pajamas! We still do that even though we're all not together when we wake up on Christmas morning. However, she now buys FH his Christmas pajamas too and I make him wear them to bed on Christmas Eve. It's cute and dorky and he even admitted that it's a really cute thing to do when we have kids!

I want to keep up all my family traditions. And make sure a big Irish Breakfast is served Christmas morning after Mass.
We also painted ornaments this year, something I hope we can continue each year.

Cool question - I think I will have to give this some more thought. We will prob go to my family on x-mas eve (he was raised Jewish) and his family on x-mas (his brother is married to a woman with a big catholic family so has been celebrating x-mas) but I imagine with kids in the pic will make up our own traditions.
FH was so cute yesterday. said he wanted to dress up as Santa when we had kids. . .

We always have deli food on Christmas Eve, cold cuts, macaroni and potato salad, rolls, olives, pickles...but I'll never be allowed to continue that one!
We really don't have any other traditions, and I don't know what we'll come up with on our own. I think that we'll always be with another family (his, because God FORBID we ever do anything with mine) for every holiday, and won't have to/be able to establish any traditions of our own.

Since I was a baby my family put up the tree on Dec 12 which was my dads bday(he passed away when I was 17) so I'm so happy that Fh and I are following in that tradition. we also buy a real tree and make a blanket for the cemetery out of the extra branches, also every year we make a personalized ornament.hummmm..... I think I might have to steal the picture idea

pjs on christmas eve. FH's family always does a gift exchange at the italian christmas bonanza every year, but our kids will def get the bulk of their presents on christmas morning. it'll be a nice tradition, and it'll put the attention on gifts from grandma and extended family.
also, i'm not religious (so much as spriritual) but i'd still like to institute grace as a a routine at the holiday dinner table. i think it's important to acknowledge all the reasons we're blessed as an exercise in getting kids to appreciate what they have. something that, as a teacher, i can tell you is seriously lacking.
