SOOOOOOO The holidays just passed. FH and I have been living together for a year now and we both come from very tight knit families....Now that were on our own its very hard for us to figure out how we will spend the holidays and whos house we're going to for what holdays because the families act like babies and dont take it well if we EVEN MENTION NOT SHOWING UP....
Did you and Fh dicuss how you will be spending holidays? How did you decide who's house you will be going to on which holidays or how you will be splitting them?

The holidays are big for both of us - so we start out celebrating w/ our respective families then based on location one of us goes to the other persons house for the 2nd half of it.
We have the rest of our lives to spend holidays together - its always nice if we can but some times distance and timing isn't in our favor.
So far Thanksgiving and Christmas have worked out nicely - hopefully Easter will be the same.

our families are about 5 min apart so we can go to both, and for things like christmas we can do eve and one house and day at the other.

This is the same with us - we spend the holidays with both of our families. The only exception is Christmas. We spend Christmas Eve with FH's family and Christmas with my family.

Ever since FH and I have started dating, we have alternated holidays every year. We found this to be the easier way to spend time with our families.
But there are some holidays that my family does big that his family doesnt do anything at all. So it's easy for us to really figure out the holidays.

We are interfaith, so we always do Thanksgiving at my parents (we have a huuuuuge thing with almost 30 people, his family does almost nothing) and we go to Ohio to see his family for Christmas (ugh...glad there's a whole year before I have to do that again )

Re: *~*~ QOTD 1/4/10*~*~ IN-LAWS
we are lucky that our family's holidays don't clash much.
Thanskgiving - my family does everything early (like 12 noon) because we know people have other places they have to go. FH's family doesn't start until about 3 so if anything we may miss a little bit of the appetizers but it works out fine.
Christmas - my family does the opening presents thing on Christmas Eve so that doesn't clash with FH's family at all. Christmas Day we go to FH's parents house for breakfast and to open presents. Then we go to visit my one grandma/dad/aunt/uncle and then head to my other grandma's house for a Christmas lunch... then it's back to FH's family for dinner (lots of running around that day but we get through it).
New Years - my family never really did anything and FH's parents always host a party at their house so that's where we will be.
Easter - My family does Easter Saturday, FH's fmaily does Easter Sunday.

Re: *~*~ QOTD 1/4/10*~*~ IN-LAWS
The holidays are big in my family to make sure everyone is together. I have a super small fam which consists of 1 grandma an aunt uncle and 3 cousins that live on li and then its just 6 other ppl in other states but we never do holidays with them. For thanksgiving we always spend first at my house then go to FH's moms then christmas eve is FFIL's and christmas day is my fam then FMIL's. Easter is whoever is having it but always start at my house. I find it really hard to spend time w all of FH's fam bc his parents are divorced and his dad remarried so we have a bunch of families we have to go to but I cant wait till we have our own house bc then everyone can come to us so we dont have to worry about it anymore!!

I think alternating years is a good idea.. but my mom and his mom apparently has selective memory when that time comes. Like last year we were at my moms for new years and all of a sudden this year she's like ohhhhhhi forgot and i already made all these plans for us.. They make it so hard for us

This year we spent thanksgiving separate and we were together with my family on Christmas day..its not that easy...FH family doesn't really do anything at all and my family make a big to do about the holidays so its def going to be a stress once we are married.

FH and I have been dealing with this since we started dating. FH still lives in CT with his parents so mostly we commute back and forth as it is. But lately we spend more time on LI ( cant wait till he moves here). This year we went to my Aunts for Thanksgiving, Then for Christmas we went to his house for Christmas Eve then back to LI for Christmas Day. New Years this year we were here since we had parties and weddings this weekend. Easter we usually go to my Aunts. I have a bigger family that is close knit compared to FH/. So I kind of have the upper hand.

We usually go to each others house for the major holidays. We usually do mines first since my Mom serves dinner early and doesn't allow alcohol or anything. Then we go to his house to party and have a good night. His family are drinkers and LOVE wine. We have been doing that for 6 years and everything has been good so far.

We try our best to see both famiilies on the holidays; however, once we're married will be splitting the holidays and alternating each year.

We pretty much go by if he has off or not. If he has to work, then I go to my family and see him after he gets out. If he is off then we go to both families. Usually we go to mine for dinner and his for dessert.

I really luck out that my FH is Jewish. Christmas is my favorite holiday and he enjoys the season as well. So Christmas will always be with my family. Thanksgiving how ever will rotate. His family lives in Fla w/ the exception of his brother whos in NY. So we decided One year FLa, next year NY at his bros the FLA then NY at ours. His brother is really close with my family so every year it is in NY my whole fam will come. Should be interesting b/c have huge fam. and they have small.. Slowly we are becoming our own little family!

We spend Thanksgiving with his family in CT and Christmas with my family in LI. Easter will most likely be spent with my family because that's when he proposed to me. Otherwise, Easter is up in the air.

argh!! this was a problem... cause FH mom thinks he should just be there for everything and not leave!!!! argh!! anyway
Thanksgiving - we are going to alternate years (this year we split it and his mom didnt think we were there long enough sooooo a new plan for next year)
