'What is respect? It's pouring your hot water at night when you've had a long day. It's holding the door for you, and kissing you good night.... It's caring for your parents and his. And this respect should stay AFTER marriage'
Did fh ask your parents before he proposed to you? Or did they at least know?

Re: QOTD 2 February 9
I think this is an issue with my mom and dad. He did not say anything... although we are not 'Official' yet in their eyes (no ring) I wonder if him not asking is the reason for that...

Yes. Unfortunately it was not easy for him. FH decided in June 07 that he was going to do this and he went and put down the deposit on my ring. He was going to propose to me on my birthday weekend [September 23rd]. However, my brother passed away in July and needless to say things were really hard on me and my family. So when September came Chris had to ask them and although they were happy it was hard cause they were still morning my brother. I give him a lot of credit but I thank my sister the most ... She really coached him through everything

Yes he did. My parents are very traditional so when we began talking about marriage, I reminded him that he needed to ask my father's permission and he said, 'of course I would ask him I already knew that.' OMG how cute is he??
My cousin's husband never asked her father and he is stil pissed to this day. He mentions it from time to time about how angry he is....my cousin has been married for a little over 3 years now.

we've been together for 4 1/2 years, so when we got engaged, people were like 'finally!' my mom was the last to know, and she was mildly hurt about this for a millisecond until she started squealing with glee over the engagement (she FH).

He didn't ask my parents but my mom went with him to put the downpayment on the ring. They knew he was going to do it but they didn't know when.... since he's waiting to get his tax money back to pay for the rest of the ring.

Yes. Pat went to see my Father- asked his permission. And, he even showed him the ring! I thought it was sweet that he did that.

Re: QOTD 2 February 9
ever since we knew we were getting married I have layed it out that you HAVE to ask my dad, he will kill you if you dont ask him, ( very traditional italian father- think Tony Soprano) he didnt want to tell my mom cause she cant keep a secret to save her life!!! So its really just my dad that knew

My FH lucked out. I don't have any family...parents, etc.. for him to ask. So, no he didn't ask anyone. He didn't even tell his parents until afterwards.

No, only because we had a kid together and were living together by then, so my parents already knew we would get married.....but if i were still living @ my parents house w/no kid at the time of proposal, he would have had to ask my father.

My mother had given so much 'approval' before he even asked me and my father gave his 'stamp of approval' when we were talking hypothetically talking about it one day that he didn't feel he needed to ask directly. if he wasn't sure, he would have asked!

what makes something like this official?!? certainly not a ring! I know couples that have been wearing rings for YEARS and have no plans on getting married any time soon. hopefully your parents will realize that FH loves you and wants to marry you and, at this point, no matter what they think, it's happening!

He asked my mom and my stepdad. I had always told him that it would be important to them and they were so happy that he did! My stepdad even told him he was happy that he'd have a 'son' which was shocking! And he made my mommy cry bc she was sooo happy but then she also would avoid talking to me at all until he asked lol
