QOTD

QOTD

I've known people in the past who have been in relationships where the families didnt like the boyfriend or Fiance... I know my family couldnt stand my ex..

So my questions is...

Would you marry your FH if you knew your family didnt completly approve?

i think that most (not ALL) of the time if the family doesnt like the person its for a reason - my parents weren't crazy about anyone i dated but they love love love my FH - and that is important to me - i wouldnt want to marry someone that my parents didnt have any respect for, or thought was a bum, thought was controlling, or something like that....and i knew that they felt that i could do better when i was dating other guys in the past and you want to know what, they were 100% right....so i would take into consideration their feelings because sometimes people on the outside looking in can see things that you may be blind to...whether its good or bad....

I know what you mean!! When I was with my ex.. I thought about marriage... but my family really couldnt stand him. He was a real sleez ball. But i didnt really notice it.. You make excuses for them because you're blinded by the love. I dont think that I could marry someone my family didnt approve of, if it were for logical reasons. If it was for a reason because of his nationality or race, I think that would be a stupid reason and think I may go through with it..

i agree - if it were because he wasn't white or wasn't catholic then too bad for them luckily my parents aren't that way, they always said we don't care as long as the person treats you nice - i think if i wanted to marry one of my ex's (which i never wanted to thank god!) i think my mom would have stepped in and said something to me - that kid was a bum, if we were still together we'd probably be homeless by now

I must say I totally agree with what both of you said. My parents hated my ex...in particular my ex from college and they were 100% right about him. It took me some time to see it but when i did it was for the best that I left him. He wanted to get enaged and I'm so glad we didn't...I save myself a lot of heartache...plus at 23 I was just too young. He's an absolut lunatic and still is and when FH and I started dating...mind you 10 years after things ended with him he took it hard...he told a friend we have in common that he was devasted. Now if it was for religion, race, etc. I'd prob. have gone through with it.

I don't think I would marry someone my parents didn't respect, like and get along with all that well. I mean I would trust my parents/family's judgement about the guy maybe they see something I don't. But if it was over something silly that they didn't like him, I would still marry him and they'd have to get over it.

But my parents loving and respecting the person I am with is important to me. And thankfully my parents and family LOVE my Fh. They have known him for 14 yrs so it makes it easier. And thankfully his family loves me too

I said I would.. because if I knew it was right and their reasons for not approving were things they could get over... like religion or something else,, then it is do-able
