What's the best advice you ever received about marriage?
I our case we have a baby already so the best advice I could think of that we got from our Pastor was to get at least two hours of alone time a day when the baby is sleeping because it will help strenthen our relationship as a couple. It has been so helpful even now because sometimes you get so caught up taking cake of the baby you forget to enjoy each other which can hurt your relationship in the long run. Eventually the children will leave home one day and if you haven't been building your relationship it might fall apart because the children may have been keeping us together.
Have a wonderful day ladies!

Someone told us when we got engaged to never go to bed angry, you just wake up more mad the next day (which in our case is SO true). We've been sticking by this, even if we have to be up at 5AM for work, we are on the phone or sitting on the couch talking until 3AM to solve the problem. It was the best advice so far!

don't go to bed angry
don't get mad over every little thing otherwise you will be angry 24/7
take one night and go on a date....doesn't have to be anything crazy or expensive, even just a movie, walk on the beach, etc...

my parents always said that the one thing that kept them strong was making time for each other and no matter how little money and time they had they made sure they went on a vacation alone each year, even if it were for a few days. let's hope we have babysitters so we can do that!!!

The best advice I’ve ever gotten was to think before you speak. Take a breath and think about how the person will feel if you say what you want to say when you’re really angry. And never get too personal when having an argument, (like saying nasty, hurtful things), because that is hard to recover from.

I agree Sheena, when you have kids it really gets hard to focus on the relationship 100%. That's why FH and I sometimes may send them away for a weekend or whenever we can so we can spend some alone time :)

I've gotten so much really great advice on marriage but the best came from actress Ruby Dee, who was married to Ozzie Davis for like a hundred years. She said, talk. Talk about everything. Tell jokes, vent, talk about your day, any and everything! Communication kept alive + time together = a happy, long lived marriage! I have to agree so far...
Another one is vacations. Take at least one big one a year and 1 or 2 small ones. Some without the kids for alone time. I love this one.

The best advice I received is no matter how outrageous something FH says, always listen to every last detail before deciding if what he says is really that outrageous because sometimes he just may need to say every last thought in his head to feel better

When we went to our engaged encounter, they spent alot of time discussing everyones 'love language' ...which is your own personal way that you feel loved. Some people feel more loved if the other person does chores to help out, others feel more loved when they get gifts and some others feel loved when they get affection. I think it's important to identify which of those things is important to your spouse so you know what area to concentrate on

Re: *****~~~~~~~~QOTD~~~~~~********
no one has yet given me advice about marriage but i since FH & i have been together for almost 10 years we have learned so many things on our own.
its not worth forcing the other to do something they do not want to do.
sometimes its okay to go to bed angry, because everyone feels better after a good night sleep.
love is much more important then money.
sometimes a weekend away from each other is the best medicine.

To remember to take time just for us away from everything else to remember why we're getting (or got) married in the first place. FH and I try to have a date night once a month specifically for this purpose.
