Good morning! So my first question...how did you and fh/dh decide where to live? Was it a no brainer? Were compromises made? Do you wish you could pick some place else?

Since we were both moving from out of state, we knew that based on DH's job offer, we would be relegated to the UES or UWS. We wanted to be in the City and we couldnt count on me having a job right away
I met with a realtor and found our place! Because it was a condo rental, it had nice amenities....for me, the biggest thing was the washer/dryer in unit!

Well, both of us have lived in the city since 2001 (we lived 2.5 blocks from each other for years before we met), most of downtown by Union Square. He moved to the UES 2 years ago. We both knew we wanted to move out of the city - we were both kinda 'over' it, and most of our friends had moved out to the boroughs so living in the city didn't give us that convenience anymore. We knew we needed to be somewhere convenient to the subways, since though my office is in Manhattan, I'm often going all over the place for work. He works in Downtown Brooklyn. Queens was out because of its subway limitations, and also because I was having a hard time justifying living in Queens when I could go just over the border into Nassau and get a real house if we wanted.
We both love Park Slope and have for a while, so we decided to focus on there and also on Prospect Heights, which is right next to PS but cheaper. We ultimately ended up with an amazing condo in Prospect Heights, but a 5ish minute walk to the border of Park Slope. We are also right by the Atlantic Terminal station, which means that we can get to almost any train. Now we just need a closing date...

We both wanted to live in the city, BUT we wanted to buy something. City and buying don't go belong in the same sentence in our lives, we're just not that ready financially. We both work in the city and enjoy being able to walk to restaurants and the convenience of being in the middle of everything, but money is just a problem. FH really wanted to rent for at least a little while, but he works SO much and he's going back to grad school for the next 2-3 years and I feel like I'd be so lonely. We decided to buy a great apartment in Great Neck. It's huge, our mortgage is way lower than rent would have been in the city. I live 5 minutes from my mom and it's a 25 minute train ride into the city. Not bad. I have friends and coworkers who live AND work in the city and their commute is longer than mine.

FH is from Queens but most of our family and friends live in LI so we decided LI would be best for us. We originally wanted to buy a house but it just wasn't in the budget with the wedding so we opted to get a co-op. We needed one that was pet friendly so the options weren't very wide. We found a great 2 bedroom in Rockville Centre and we love it!

this was definitely a tough decision for us and a test to our relationship because i moreso than him really did not want to leave NY. but FH's company gave him an offer we couldnt refuse. so we are relocating to Houston next month. it was not an easy choice at all but right now we're young and have no children so it seems like the perfect time to try something new and if we hate it we can always come back to NY.

I moved up from Florida, so when FH and I went apartment shopping certain things were a big deal for me. I used to work 5 mintues from where I lived, so I didn't like a relly long commute. (we live in Port Washington, and I still think anything over 20 minutes is long!) Also, a washer and dryer unit or hook up was VERY important to me. I don't like laundry mats. FH is a member of the Sea Cliff fire department, so he didn't want to move too far away from there either. So we settled in Port Washington. It's where we end up next which will be the hardest decision - either closer into the city or farther out on the island....oh decisions decisions.

FH and I grew up 10 minutes from each other (but different school districts) and we knew we wanted to stay in the same area. We're both from Northport, and I bought a house in East Northport in 2008 that he eventually moved into. We plan on buying a bigger house in the same town next spring. We both LOVE Long Island and right now we are close to our jobs and our families and friends....I plan on finding a new job after our honeymoon and I may have to commute to the city, but hopefully I'll find a job on LI. I guess we'll see!

I went where the job was. There was no teaching jobs on LI when I graduated, so I went upstate. DH moved in a year later. After we lived there, we bought a townhome even further upstate (Newburgh...What is wrong with me!?!?!!?) I lost that job and got another one on the smae side of the hudson...no bridges!!! I'd LOVE to move back to LI (ENpt would be nice..) or even CT (where DH is from) but I already checked some schools and the current school I'm in and love allows me to teach Spanish to K-5 graders...nothing like it in LI...yet!

I lived in LI and FH lived in BK. I worked all the way in westchester, and he worked 5-10 mins from his house. We had to move somewhere in between that cut down my commute in half, and since we couldn't move over the bride, we moved right BY the bridge so his commute got a little longer, but not much, and my commute got shorter.
Now I am not working in westchester, but I really like the area so we will stay put for now.

Re: *-*- Qotd 8/15 *-*-
I asked this question because when I came home from the bridal shower with all the boxes and bags, and we no longer have room to move, FH yelled 'it's time to move!'. I own the one bedroom we live in, and we def want a two or three bedroom. yesterday we went to look at two three bedrooms and were so disappointed. The one we saw in Queens was not much bigger then our one bedroom and the one in Douglaston was nice, but his commute would be awful. So that led us to talking about how to figure out where to live. I drive to work, but he works in Chelsea, at a school. So we decided to stay in the area we live in now so his commute his easy. Searching online, we found some really nice town house/co-ops, so we'll see what happens!!

I owned a house in West babylon so DH moved in way before the proposal and we're staying here for a little while. We're looking to move in a couple years to a better school district and a bigger house. I can't wait to move. I would love to move back to Nassau (I miss sidewalks), but DH grew up in Suffolk. I guess I wouldn't mind western suffolk, but my first choice is eastern nassau!
