I think these are great if used in the right places. Churches definitely.... Schools EVEN MORE definitely.
I have also heard of portable cellphone jammers that people can carry around with them that can jam out any cellphone signal within a certain radius.

Totally for it... theaters, movies, church! Conference rooms! I used to hate in a meeting when the boss' cell phone would ring and it was his KIDS. UGH.

How about in traffic -- people who talk on the cell phone make me crazy!

I'm split. I think its a great idea, we've all had an rude person talking loud on the train, or cellphones ringing at the movies or in church and I would love to reduce that problem, but what if there is a true emergency at home and they can't get through to you because you are in a building that has a jammer?

'but what if there is a true emergency at home and they can't get through to you because you are in a building that has a jammer?'
Then it would be like the days before cell phones... I think sometimes people forget that the world CAN operate without cell phones. I mean, they have only been around (truly mainstream) for like 15 years or less. The world won't stop spinning if the cell phone connection is lost for a couple of hours.

Re: QOTD: Are you for or against Cell-Phone Jammers ???
I actually have a problem with this - While I think there are thousands of disrepectful people out there who do not know better than to get up and LEAVE the restaurant OR theater to talk - what about emergencies. I would rather see rules where people can be removed for useing your phone - in theaters I see nothing wrong with having it on vibrate and LEAVING the theater to talk IF there is an emergency.
If you are a dr there are times you are required to be on call - if they jamb the phone you won't be too happy if you are dying and your dr can't be reached if you need them and NO they shouldn't sit at home becuase they might be needed. My uncle is a dr and there was a time YEARS ago before pagers (my dad had this when he interned in the DA's office one summer) when you went to a movie or restaurant you had to say I am sitting at table or seat/row X and if there is an emergency someone will have to come and get me - something tells me that today with the huge multiplexes that it would not be too realistic.
To those who are parents - what if your child is injured/sick and the babysitter needs you for some reason - I would be leary that with cell phones and pagers these days that the movies would not try too hard to find me in the theater if that happens -
Too bad there isn't a why to turn phones into pagers when in public places. This way the person can go somewhere less irratating and make their call - wishful thinking right?

Re: QOTD: Are you for or against Cell-Phone Jammers ???
cellphones operate at a different frequency than beepers i believe.
They can jam the cellphones without jamming the beepers.
Again it all boils down to... a few years ago nobody had cellphones and we lived.
And i am one of those people that would have no problem buying a portable phone jammer just to have for that annoying person on the bus or whatever that just WONT shut up.

While the idea is appealing I am not crazy about it.
For one thing, it would only be a matter of time before cell phones would be developed in such a way that they are immune to the jammers, then there would be newer and better jammers, and so on.
(Did anyone see the movie 'The Hit Man' with Mark Wahlberg with the super phone tracer...LOL)
I don't think anyone would appreciate having their calls randomly jammed because someone thought they were annoying. Plus there would be the jerks that jam calls just for the hell of it.
As always, it's unfortunate that the few people that have no reguard or respect for others have to make life uncomfortable for others. This would never happen, but it would be nice if people could just follow simple social rules and respect their environments.

Totally for it. Whenever Felicia and I go to the movies, it never fails that somsone's cell phone goes off during a good part.
How many times have you seen 'America's Funniest Home Videos' and someone's cell phone is going off during a wedding?

I'm all for them in theatres and churches. However, we have to keep in mind when cell phones are rude and wrong to use, and when they are just annoying. I don't see why cell phones can't be used on commuter trains. Granted, there are people who are annoying, but it's not much different than those people who have loud conversations with one another on the train. At least with a cell phone you only have to hear 1 side!

I wish that people would just learn that unnecessary cell phone use in public places is rude, but hey, most people never learn.

OOOooooo OOooooo OOOOoooo Where can I get one!
I freaking HATE the cellphone rudeness.
I'd probably carry the dang thing with me at all times.
I hate folks on the phone in the car driving too slow and weaving, making turns at the LAST second.
I hate those LONG LONG conversations on the train. Shut up already. I work late so I don't have to hear about YOUR day at work - go away.
I hate those folks who god help me leave their cell phones on and at their desk while they leave the office for long periods of time. Nothing like hearing Mambo #5 over and over and over again while trying to conduct business!
I hate those folks who MUST have their daily 'mom talk' while eating dinner out. I want to talk to my hubby not hear the drama of your family, buzz off!
I hate sitting in a large conference room, ball room or other gathering and listening to a speaker when all of a sudden.. 'Hello?, yeah I'm blah blah blah.. ' I lose half the dang speech and it ALWAYS happens when I actually want to HEAR what's said. Turn it off or on vibrate!
Don't get me started on the unprofessionalism of having your cell phone on at a business meeting God how embarassing!
Lets not forget the walkers and talkers. Ok, you can't DRIVE straight and talk, what makes you think you can WALK? I love when they meander in front of my car or walk by the house and scream at their bf/gf on the phone
Yep, I need one of these bad boys and I need one NOW

Re: QOTD: Are you for or against Cell-Phone Jammers ???
I WISH I knew about that sooner. At my wedding, right when we had our first kiss, someone's cell phone RANG ON FULL BLAST!!!!! It echoed throughout the ENTIRE church and while everyone was supposed to be oohing and ahhing over our first kiss, they were all looking at the back at the people whose phone was ringing.
It rang SEVEN times. It had to be edited out of our video. So, instead of hearing our officiant talking, there is music playing...
And, these stupid people were trying to pretend that it wasn't them. So, they didn't turn if off...they just kept letting it ring. And, then the 'message waiting' indicator beeped.
It was SO OBVIOUS who it was...GRRRRRRRR
edited to add: one of our best men was SUPPOSED to make an ANNOUNCEMENT before the ceremony requesting that people remember to silence their phones. BUT, he decided that he'd just mention it to DH's cousins who are famous for inappropriate cell phone ringing...

I think this cell phone law (in the car) is really a joke. Nothing against anybody. But some people are really redicious

I feel people should just respect others and get up and leave the room if they need to talk! If your on the train or the theater...Text messaging works too and noone 'hears' your conversation!

For whatever reason, it really annoys me when I am on a treadmill and the person next to me is yammering away loud enough so that I can hear them with my headphones on.
