QOTD: What is something your parents used to say....

Original post by Sasha96

What is something your parents used to say to you as a child that you promised yourself you would never say-but now you find yourself saying it?
---------------------------------------------------------

My mother has a ton of catch phrases. Right now I'm not sure what I say...we do joke about how often she says, 'It's something different for a change'! But the other day we were out shopping together and you would have thought she had an echo!

We all got the 'Don't make me stop this car!'

The occasional 'If you don't stop crying I'll give you something to cry about.'

Oh those were so my Mother!

'I don't care what x's mother let's her do'

'Would you rather me be a parent that doesn't care?' This was after having to tell my mother where I was going, with who, when, how long I'd be there and what time I was coming home oh and leave the phone number (this is before cell phones).

YES!!! My mother too...anytime someone else was allowed to do something that I wasn't, she said, 'well that's because her mother doesn't love her at all.' UGH!

And, 'Trust me, I lived longer than you and I have more experience about this.' I hated that, but now I find myself telling that all the time to my 20 year old sister, who hates when I say that but now I know it's true!

My MIL is a good woman but she has her own vocabulary at times that she has passed down to DH:

a 'barf' = an annoying person, somewhat self-centered

a 'fussbucket' = a picky person

a 'footsie' = passing gas

and every conversation ends with 'ok, very well then...'. (Dh doesn't do this)

#1 saying for my mom was:

'Stop crying.... or I WILL give you something to cry about.'

Well, duhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... you already did give me something to cry about or I wouldn't be crying in the first place!!

Edited to add, and how could I forget....

my Dad's favorite thing to say in response to a question:

'Well what did your mother say?'

I would hate it when my mom and dad would comment on the music my brother and I would listen to, and would cringe, saying 'that sounds just horrible -- they really just don't make good music like they used to when WE were growing up'

Well of course I say that ALL the time now when I listen to what my teenage cousins like

Yes, I am officially 'OLD'

Another one from MIL....DH's and BIL's bands were always described as sounding 'like a dying duck in a thunderstorm'. Love that one!

when my mother didn't want to tell people she was going to pee...she would say
'I'm going to shake the dew from my lily'

and when we asked why a sibling got something and we didn't she would say
'Because I like them better'

From my dad:

What do I look like, an idiot?

What do I look like, a rockefeller?

Money doesn't grow on trees.

Because i'm the Father, you're the daughter.

Don't down it (when I drank soda too fast- as in here's your coke, don't down it)

From Mom:

Strap on the hair net (this is what she said if I slacked off @ school).

Who do you think you are? (this I always hated)

Mom- 'you can never go back in time and say 'if only' ' (which I must admit is very true)
'I hope you have a daughter just like you' and with my luck I will
'the squeaky wheel gets the oil' from that she turned me into a complainer. lol!

Dad- 'tell me you love me' I find that I say that to FH because he's not very fluent in the language of love. lol!

Mom used to say that all the time!

Re: QOTD: What is something your parents used to say....

Here's more:

Dad - when I asked him what he was doing (when it was obvious what he was doing but I asked anyway) 'I'm waiting for the bus' or 'I'm writing a letter to Uncle Willie'

Uncle Willie is my mom's uncle but my dad and he wrote to each other all the time.

And not that my mom said these things all the time but they became the 'catch phrases' in my extended family:

When my sister was 2 and I was 10, my mom's relatives came to visit from Ireland and they had all gone out one night drinking. The next day my mom was all hungover and Brigid was annoying her about something and all of a sudden my mom turned around and said very firmly 'GIVE ME A BREAK, BRIGID!!!!!!!' My cousins thought htat was the funnies thing ever said and they STILL say 'Give me a break Brigid' back in Ireland when someone is annoying them.

I came from an irish catholic family and whenever I would be bad and I'd get hurt or something negatve would happen after I was bad, my mom would say 'God got you back!', meaning, you were bad and you got punished. We laugh about it now because it seems so mean. But it was just a phrase her family used, sometimes I have to catch myself becasue when my 5 year old throws a tantrum and then hits her foot or something I say it to her too.

my dad says the same thing, 'see, god punished you.' drives me nuts, but now i say it to.

'You're Gonna Lose'... my dad would always say that when i would argue back at him.. now I always say it to my students at school.

'It's just a stage' ... whenever I would do something that was appropriate for my age my parents would say it and now I am always saying it as well

I don't say this, but she says this all the time STILL: 'Oh, wow, that guy's cute. I bet he's gay!'
She thinks all really good looking men are gay

And my dad, everytime we would do something nice for him, he would say, 'Oh, I guess now I have to take back all those bad things I said about ya!'
Such a dork!
