Question about block ofrooms at hotel

Do you need to make an appointment to look at hotels and discuss blocking rooms for the wedding?

FH and I want to go sometime this weekend, but we're not sure of which day yet

I made appointments with a couple of places, since we wanted to make sure that management was there and would be able to show us rooms, esp. after we went to a couple of places unannouced and they didn't have anything ready to show us, since there were people checked into the bridal suites.
