Question about donating hair

Question about donating hair

I've never dyed my hair before, but recently I'm noticing more and more grey or white strands! There aren't many of them, but if I part my hair or pin it up in certain ways the ones I do have are pretty noticeable (in fact, my boss noticed a couple of them the other day and mentioned that I should start dying my hair I'm only 25 - I'm too young for this ). Anyway, can you donate hair that's been dyed? My hair has grown sooooo long and it's extremely healthy. There's no reason why I wouldn't donate it after the wedding. But if other people are starting to notice white strands, it seems I have no choice but to dye it beforehand! If I do, do I lose the option of donating it? Hoping some of you girls have feedback!

Re: Question about donating hair

I donated mine through Locks of Love, but Pantene also does donations. Here's what Locks of Love requires:

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS

* Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
* Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
* Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process.
* Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable because it is not bundled in a ponytail or braid.
* Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable. If shaving your head, first divide hair into multiple ponytails to cut off.
* We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
* Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.
* Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.

* Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
* 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.

Here's what Pantene requires:

In order to make the most beautiful, realistic and durable wigs, donated hair must meet the requirements below.

* Donated hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long (measure hair from just above the elastic band of the ponytail to the ends).
* Wavy/curly hair texture is fine—you may straighten hair to measure.
* Hair should be freshly washed and completely dry, without any styling products.
* Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes. It cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.
* Hair may not be more than 5 percent gray.

Looks like you can donate to either one. I'm not sure where you live, but I got a free haircut from T. Carlton Spalon in Smithtown (maybe Happauge?) because I was donating.

Re: Question about donating hair

I donate evry 2 years every other may and have been for over 12 years now. They pretty much accept any hair that isn't bleached from the root.

Even then I believe they sell your hair for pennies on the dollar if it isn't usable.

Re: Question about donating hair

wow- i so wanna donate my hair after the wedding too.

i say go ahead and use a semi permanent dye- or if you go to a salon tell them you want to cover some grays- you'll feel so much better when you're not self conscious about it.

Re: Question about donating hair

I dye my hair and always donate it every two years or so. If they cannot actually use the hair to make a wig, they will sell it and use the money as a donation toward a wig. So, Locks of Love is great.
