I am getting married on a saturday night and it is formal attire. My FH is from out west and they don't have weddings like we have here on LI. How do I let his family know that it is formal attire without being tacky?

you can just put Black tie on the bottom of the invite... many ppl will know that its formal

i would just tell them (word of mouth) that they need to be wearing suits / cocktail dresses
ETA: if it's black tie, then you should write 'black tie preferred' on the invitation ... if it's suits / dresses kind of formal, then word of mouth

I would put on the invite 'formal attire' or 'black tie optional' not everyone will come in a tux but they will get the point.

I would put on the invite 'formal attire.' That way there's no way of them showing up under dressed...

I have the same issue.. We too are getting married on a Saturday night with about 225 ppl. My FH is from a very small town in Mass. I dont want to have to write BLACK TIE but i am scared what some people might show up in if I dont@!!!!!!!
