Re: Question about gift giving
I think so. maybe she gave the gift to you knowing she would get it back when she got married. But if it is too hard, you could get her a gift, not cash so the monetary exchange wont be 'this for that'. I wouldn't give her less cash though. JMO.

Re: Question about gift giving
Tough one. If you give her $500 it's like you both broke even. It's a lot of money but some would argue that if you do that it's as if you just exchanged checks. I, personally, am not a big fan of this rule but etiquette does say you have up to one year to give the gift. Hmmm...

Re: Question about gift giving
also, we paid for a majority of our wedding, my friend is not paying a penny for her own wedding. i think i'm going to have to give the same amount though. just wanted some opinions!

Re: Question about gift giving
We had a gm give us $400 and now he is getting married in three weeks and my DH is a gm. We are in the same situtation: paid for our wedding, they are not paying for theirs, and my DH is in school full time for his MBA and not working so we are tight. But, we decided to give the same $400 to them.

I know others say you should give the same amount, but if you cannot afford it, then don't do it. My MOH and her husband were guests at a wedding (neither were in the bridal party--there was none-but close friends for years) a few weeks ago, they could not afford as much of a monetary gift as they wanted to guve b/c the husband was in a motorcycle accident 4 months agi and lost his job, they are now living on 1 income in a house they bought 8 months ago. ANYWAY (sorry, got off the topic), they talked to the groom (Who was their friend) and he understood. IF there is anyway you can talk to your friend and explain your situation, maybe she'll understand. What my MOH did was gave $100 cash and bought a gift from the registry. I know it's somewhat taboo to give non-monetary gifts at NY weddings, but it's okay.
