question about gifts

question about gifts

My friend asked me a wedding related question the other day and i had no answer but i knew where to go for one, LIW!!!!
Ok, i'll ask it in the first person, just so its less confusing.

'My sister is having a destonation wedding (key west) and i had a question about gifts. I'm a bridesmaid, and of course i help pay for the bachlorette party and will bring a gift for the shower... but do i give an envelope at the actual wedding? '

So my answer to her was no. i was always under the impression that for destination weddings the gift is just being there (you gotta pay for airfare, hotel etc etc). But, what if your in the bridal party?
Any opinions?

Re: question about gifts

I was a bridesmaid in a destination wedding and I did give a gift. It was less than I normally would give but I would feel like a had to give some kind of gift.

Re: question about gifts

I would still give a gift at the wedding, but it would be less than normal due to travel costs..

Re: question about gifts

I feel like I would still give the same gift. I'd be the one who said yes to being in the BP and the one who responded yes to the wedding. Therefore, I wouldn't feel right not giving a gift that I would normally give.

I would still give a gift. Maybe not as much as I would give if it was at home and I wasnt paying airfare and lodging, but I would definetly never go to a wedding without bringing a gift, even if I am paying my way there

I would say yes for sure! Especially if it is his sister.

Re: question about gifts

I wouldn't rule out the idea of a gift... I go to a lot of Weddings as an OOT guest and typically have to give something smaller, and the B&G have always understood that, so I would picture a destination wedding the same way. However, sometimes for the couple they don't expect one. I went to an OOT wedding with my mom on thanksgiving a few years ago and the couple who was close family friends was like we don't want anything, it just means so much for you to make the trip down here!

I would say yes only because it's a sister. Otherwise no or i'd give substantially less depending on who it was.

Re: question about gifts

I'm planning on having a destination wedding. I would say yes only because its a sibling but at the same time if you were my sister I wouldn't want you to feel obligated to give anything. Just you being there and paying your way would be enough for me. Thats all I'm expecting from maid of honor and guests.

Re: question about gifts

I think no matter what you should give a gift. i went to planty of wedding that were out of state and never held back on the gift just because i had to fly or get a hotel. If i didn't have the money i just wouldn't go to the wedding. Just my opinion.

Re: question about gifts

I'd still give a gift, but not as much as I would have for a local reception.

I would say yes to a sister. ( a normal gift) but if it was anyone else i would still give a gift but smaller.

I would give a gift even if I were just a guest at the wedding. It would be less than I would give if it were on LI though

Re: question about gifts

ditto to the above..its her sis, so yea she should give a gift. but for the average person, def less than normal assuming you are swinging all of your own costs for the wedding.
