Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

For those girls who went to a place where the flight was over 8 hours or so.... (ie: Hawaii, Tahiti, Europe...etc) How many of you girls went first class?? Also...did you buy tickets first class?? or were you upgraded... if upgraded, what airline did you fly.... Thanks for the feedback.

FH really wants to get first class tickets, but it's about $2000 more...and I don't really think it's necessary...

first class is definitly worth it b/c you get to sleep and eat a nice meal and you arrive completely relaxed and refreshed. You dont have swollen feet, jetlag, achy back, or sleepyness. If you can do it, its def worth it.

We are having a 12+ hour flight and going first class but we are using our miles in order to get the tickets through american airlines who are partners with many other airlines. We booked with swiss.

Well, I'll let you know that Air Tahiti Nui will not upgrade you just because you are on your honeymoon. Almost everyone on that flight will be on their honeymoon too.

All first class and business class tickets must be purchased.

I tried to upgrade using my miles, and I was not allowed to do that either. Don't know if the rules have changed.

Re: Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

ive traveled both first class and economy...with long flightss.... 4 years ago i went to singapore and my flight was economy class and i think the total time ended up beinglike 15 hours.. and i couldnt feel my feet, my back hurt, i was a mess

and this year when i went to Egypt which is a 16 -17 hr flight i did first class and YESS it was worth it lol...

I dunno..... we travel quite frequently to europe, and have yet to envy those in first class.... I have been upgrated, so I have seen life 'on the other side'.

I really don't think forking over a laptop's worth of money is worth an extra 3 inches of seat for 6-10 hours. Never mind the food..... all airplane food is questionable... it may be 'better' in first class, but it still is far from GOOD...

Think about it this way: you have a minor sacrifice for 8 hours or so, and you have 'earned your laptop'....

one thing that IS worth the extra $$$$:

direct flight vs transfers..... 2 transfers could kill a person.... especially w/ weather delays...

2 transfers? 1 transfer nearly killed me..lol

and i HATE airplane food no matter what, its makes me nauseous the smell

Re: Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

the food on european airlines are actually really good. All american air carriers are a disgrace and their food is just smelly and gross... and i would never pay to fly first class on an american owned airline...its just money thrown in the garbage....

The best airlines to fly 1st:
Singapore
Swiss
Emirates
Qatar
iberia
air france
british airways

just to name a few

We're flying to non-stop to Venice in May for our HM and going Business Class. We used our sky miles to upgrade through Delta.

yeah, that 2 transfer trip was unfortunate.... Ah, the things one must endure for business....

airplane/airport sustenance (can't call it food) is an unfortunate thing.... no matter how good the airline, it always tastes like a bad prepackaged sandwich or no-frills frozen dinner.......

On a positive note: european airlines provide tons of liquor, and that makes everything a distant fuzzy memory

i have to diasgree with you on this one. Airlines such as the ones i mentioned above are actually incrediable in every aspect. I have not flown all of them but alot of them and know other people who have flown with them and its def. an experiance, especially singapore and emirates. It is obviously not a 5 star dining experiance but they are very far from tasting like a pre-packaged frozen food dinners.

ETA: A few pics

Emirates airline first class cabin. Food comes from cipriani resturant in nyc and each passanger has sliding doors for privacy in their own 'suite'

We are going to Thailand and our flight will be 17 hours non stop on Thai Airways.

We decided to upgrade to premium economy because the seats go back much further, there is more leg room and the seats are a bit bigger. Would love to have flown first but it was $5000 dollars more then coach. We are forking an extra $1000 each for premium economy which on these planes are like business class seats.

We flew air tahiti nui and we didnt think first class was necessary - the seats are roomier than regular coach seating.

when we flew, the flight wasnt over booked- so there was room to space out- in fact, i took up an entire row and made a bed for myself to sleep.

it was great.

the food wasnt that bad either and the movies were great!

This past spring was my first long trip. We went to italy. It was great going. We had all 3 seats next to the window to ourselfs. I streached out over the seats like it was my bed... And I slept the whole way. Coming back was a bit crowded and cramped. But other then that it wasn't to bad. I think going to Hawaii for our HM, FH will want first class. he can't stand to be on a plane for more then 3 hrs.

Re: Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

We haven't finalized our HM details yet, but FH realllly wants to pay for First Class (or business class at the LEAST)... I'm having trouble justifying such a large extra expense for just half a day of travel, but we'll see. I'm sure when we make more payments to our vendors, he might change his mind!

Well, there is a difference between Europe and Tahiti by MANY MANY hours.

I always travel coach to go to Europe. But you could travel in Business class (equivalent to domestic 1st class) but not quite as expensive as 1st class. I would not travel coach to go farther than Europe.

Re: Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

We didn't do first class bc it was $4000 more. I would have totally loved to but I could not see justifying that cost.

We left two days after the wedding. I took two dramamine's and a glass of champagne. I slept the entire time. It was the coming home that was annoying.

Re: Question about honeymoons requiring looong flights....

Thanks for all of your help ladies....I think FH and I are going to go with the first class (only because we're not paying anything for our hotel for 2 weeks) so we figure we can splurge a bit!! Plus...in general we're both on the 'bigger' side of the scale and just feel that it would be more comfortable. Not to mention the fact that FH is 6'5'....so if not just to spare his knees alone!! Thanks for the feedback!!
