I can't believe you have to send 18 year olds a separate invitation if they are living at home - that irks me!! My invitations are going to be kind of pricey!! Another reason I don't want to do this is because I don't want them to feel like they have to bring a separate gift - is that the idea with the separate invite? Sorry, I am naive about this . . .

The truth is you DON'T HAVE to do anything! Regardless of what etiquette books say or what a relative or friend or whomever say.. you do NOT HAVE to do anything!

I did give over 18 their own invite... but there were some that I didn't give their own invites too. It all depended on the specific person and situation.
My cousins and Aunt were all on one invite... and they all live together. I just made it to the Cagan Family and put 7 (2 cousins and their dates, 1 cousin without date and my aunt with her date) as the number for seats reserved.
Then FH neice is 16 or 17 but she got her own invitation because there is a family situation with a divorce and the 'husband' is no invited so it was rough to decide how to do the invites... so each family member got one in that case.

Really I think it all depends. You certainly do not HAVE to give each person their own invitation. It's totally up to you. I highly doubt some 19 year old guy is going to be like... 'why didn't I get my own invitation, I wuold have liked to save it as a momento'..... I don't even think they will care.

Go according to whatever you feel is right for that particular person at hand. Don't go by what some book tells you to do.

I think that is completely up to you. We can't afford to invite all the single people with dates and we didn't want people just bringing random people just so they could have someone on their arm when they walk in the door. PLUS, some people feel releaved that they don't have to 'babysit' someone all night. If someone has been together for awhile and is serious then they get a date. If the person is 18 and older and doesn't have a significant other, then they get their own invitation but no guest.

ITA

ITA for the most part.

We did not invite anyone with a +1 unless it was sorta serious. They needed to be in an established relationship. We did make a few exceptions to that for specific reasons. But they were specific and NOT universal.

Also. Etiquette states you should invite anyone 18 or older with their own invitation. I had 1 instance where we are inviteing 5 people from one household. Parents and 3 kids. We did not send all the 3 kids invites even though they are 20, 23 and 25. We just werent going to send 4 invites to the same house.

So we did make some exceptions.

Do whats right for you.

18 or over should definitely get their own invitation. It's up to you and your FH whether you want to invite them with a guest or solo though. It depends on your budget and how many +1's your talking about!
