Does anyone know if New York State has a law that allows employees to take a leave of absence for a medical reason while still getting paid and not be in jeopardy of losing your position? Also, do you have to tell them what the medical reason is?
Thanks!

Does your company have a Personal Leave of Absence, it's different then FMLA?

Re: Question about leave of absence from work
Some companies who offer FMLA use your vacation time which means you would get paid, and then use your sick time. Each operates differently though. I know the hospital I worked for paid you by using your vacation time, then sick time if needed. You may want to look into it. I've never heard of FMLA unpaid unless you've been there less than the required time.

I hope you're okay!!
At my job it's FMLA, unpaid. But before using it, we have to use our vacation and sick days first.

I don't know how specific you have to be about the medical problem, but most companies will require a doctor's letter substantiating a reason to be given medical leave. My office certainly does that. We also grant a leave of absence for reasons other than personal medical issues. We also have short term disability insurance, and of course FMLA. We have a special policy about using vacation & sick time before unpaid FMLA for pregnancies.

Re: Question about leave of absence from work
If you are 'disabled' you get disability MANDATORY [but it's pennies unless your company has a better policy than the state policy]. i learned this from our aflac guy which means that when i go out on maternity leave [thus legally disabled], i will get paid [but it's pennies].
