Question about name change and marital status

I changed my tax withholding information to married at work today. Anyone know how that will affect me? So now I have to file the taxes together? Does my hubby have to change his to married too?

Sorry im clueless on all of this!

When I asked our accountant at the beginning of the year he said to leave things the way they were (DH and I both claim 0). He said when we sent him our paperwork in Jan he'd decide the best way to file.
I don't think you have to claim married at your job to file your taxes jointly.

If you and your DH change your status to married it just means they take out less from your taxes because as a married couple you get a tax break.

If you own a house you should also think about claiming it and change your witholding from a 0 or 1 to a 2.

Give your accountant a call and they will answer any questions you have.

Yea I was just told not to do it too.. I switched it back to single and am going to let my accountant handle it at the end of the year. I am not going to pretend to know what I am doing with all this name change & maritual update BS.

I plan on keeping my status as single 0 or whatever it is I claim now, I don't even know...I won't even be able to start my name change process until NYE (that should be fun!) because of our flight tickets and not being able to take more time off work...so I'm going to pretend I'm not married for the remaining few days of 2009.

Basically indicating whether you are married or single on your W-4 affects how much taxes are withheld from your paycheck.

If you claim single, 0 then they take out more taxes then if you were to claim married 0, married 1, etc.

Just because you are married does not mean you have to file a joint income tax return. There are some couples out there who do choose to file married filing separately; some like to keep all financial aspects separately; some want to not be held liable if their spouse is doing something they shouldn't be.

These are all questions you can put forth to your accountant. But there is no harm leaving yourself single on your withholding documents at work.

FM if you have more questions...I am a CPA.
