Is it the same process as buying a house...What I mean is can you bid lower than the asking price...Is the mortgage process the same?

Pretty much the same.... you can bid lower... etc, instead of a home inspector coming in, you'll need to have the land inspected for possible building no-nos...

You should also check with the town's building department that the land is in to see what sort of restrictions this parcel may have so you don't buy the land and realize that you can't build on it.

Yes... i know certain towns are starting to place restrictions on what sized land you can build on.

Re: Question about purchasing land
jagrawal is right! Check with the town.
Also, if you are in the town of Brookhaven, and you want to build on a lot that is narrow (I'm not sure what constitutes narrow or Class A property), there are restrictions as to amount of square footage the house can be...however, all you need to do is get a varience that gives you permission to go above the limitations, you have to go through a hearing with the town, etc. IT's no biggie, but I'd rather buy a piece of property that I know I can build what I want without any hassels with the town.
If there are certain restrictions, speak with an expiditer, and they can tell you how easy/difficult it is to get a variance.
