We are finally scheduled to go to closing next week, do we 'tip' anybody? my husband brought this up last night and I freaked out actually thinking we would have to 'tip' someone with all the money we are spending to begin with.
Does anyone know? Thanks!

Re: Question about 'Tipping' at a closing????
Yes, our lawyer (who is also a friend) told us it is customary to tip the title company person. We gave her a cash check for $60.00.
Alot people thought this was riduculous - but she did help us out by lowering our estimated taxes for the next year at the closing. (This is totally discretionary and up to her.) Which in turn lowered our payment at closing significantly.
And to be honest - I'm sure she makes far less than any other player at the table ie, attorneys, banker but does the most work. JMO.

Your attorney should be able to answer this question. I know we had to write a check payable to the 'title' person. I think that was the tip for her! We did not tip out attorney, but because she is a friend we gave her a small gift as a token of appriciation.
Good Luck

Re: Question about 'Tipping' at a closing????
Hmm maybe this is because I bought in Massachusetts and not New York, I should have mentioned that. There was no 'title' person at my closing -- just me and my husband, our lawyer, our mortgage broker, the selling agent, and the seller! All of whom were making plenty of money off the sale...

Yes, he told us right off the bat to tip the 'title girl' but is there anyone else?

We didn't tip anyone at our closing. It was mentioned to us by a friend of mine less than 24 hours before our closing and we figured that since our lawyer did not mention it, we didn't have to do it. No problems here! You spend so much money at the closing, why tip anyone who hasn't gone out of their way for you?

Question for you ladies with lawyers at closing. We are building, do we still need to have a lawyer. Exactly what does the lawyer do for the buyer?

Always tip the title closer. Anywhere from $50 to $100 is customary. (I am a paralegal who used to do closings.)

We didn't tip anyone at our closing - it was never mentioned at all - not by our lawyer or anyone else.
We did get a beautiful Mikasa bowl from the real estate agent that found the house for us

I have heard of this too, but DH and I haven't decided what we are going to do next week. Our attorney hasn't said anything to us about it, we have just heard from our family members that have recently purchased homes.

lol DIANE___ i can just picture her saying she never heard of such a thing!!!
I go to closings all the time, and the buyer usually tips the title closer anywhere from 50-200 I usually see 100.00 but have seen two hundred!!! which I think is nuts!!! 100.00 seems to be the norm I have seen 150 too, I think it depends on what your attorney normally does
