My uncle is marrying his long term girlfriend at City Hall in a few weeks. They are having a small dinner at a restaurant and had asked that in lieu of gifts we simply cover the cost of our plates. I would feel guilty going to thier dinner without a gift since they gave me both a shower and wedding present but my question is.. Should the gift I give them be comparable to the gift they gave me for our wedding? Being that he is my uncle he gave me a generous gift and I wasn't sure if I should be giving him the same amount back, especially since they said they did not expect gifts... Thanks!

Re: Question about wedding gift...
we had a similar situation...
What we did was we gave them a gift certificuit to bbb because we didn tknow what they wanted, and they are already established, and we didn twant to give them money because we knew that s NOT what they wanted... we gave 200.00 gift card and wrote 'We didnt know what to get you guys for a wedding gift and since you've been so amazing to us starting out we wanted you to buy something you didn't need but would want!'
Does that make sense?

Personally, I don't know if I'd give a cash gift especially since they asked not to. I'd buy something with sentimental meaning instead.

Re: Question about wedding gift...
I am usually all about giving what people gave you , but I think this is one of the cases where it was different. Just give a small gift liked they asked. When my aunt got remarried my sister and I chipped in and got a certiifcate to Bedandbreakfast.com or something like that so they could have a night away. I think it is silly giving a large gift to people who are a generation up from you, don't know why though.
Or maybe just give your uncle a small amount of money to cover the plate and a little pretty something extra if you feel you want to give a little more.

Re: Question about wedding gift...
If your covering your plate I wouldn't give the same amount back. If I was you I wouldn't give $$ at all, I would probably try to find something small and special for them to remember the day by.
