Anyone know if in NY state, when you go to get your forms to be married, are you legally married when you get them? Cus I know in Maine- where i grew up- you are not married by law till you say I do and it is signed by the witnesses and the person marrying you. But my fiance heard that in NY you are married when you get the forms. Anyone know?

Re: Question about when legally married
You're not legally married until the PRIEST or OFFICIANT signs the marriage license stating that they presides over the ceremony.

Nope. You're fiance is misinformed.
Marriage requires both the paperwork (contract) AND a formal act/promise (like vows)... So whether you have a big ceremony or just appear in front of a judge, you have to do something other than signing the forms. HTH
ETA - This is why the officiant and the witnesses have to sign the marriage license.

Re: Question about when legally married
Forms are just that . . . forms. To be legally married in NY State you must have a license, have someone perform some kind of ceremony where you actually declare your intention to be husband and wife in front of a witness, and then the witness must sign the license and the officiant must mail in the license. You are legally married after the license is signed by the witness.

Re: Question about when legally married
Thank you ladies- I thought that sounded weird!! Also, at my sisters wedding last summer in Maine, I asked her officiant about this, but she was just speaking about the laws in Maine, but I thought that it would be pretty standard everywhere. Even in Vegas you have to say 'I do!'
