Question about when to start changing name/address on bills

FH and I know where we're living - he lives there now in fact. You know how on your bills it has the part on the back where you can change your address? Should I be doing that AND putting my married name on there? Or will they not accept the married name without a copy of the marriage license? I don't know how this works...

Good questioned. I'd wait until you moved in though so there's no confusion!!

Not sure if credit card companies will care enough to ask for y our marriage license...

ANY MARRIED LADIES KNOW THE ANSWER!!!

I would wait until you move, just to make sure that no mail gets lost.

I didnt change my name until after I got married, and most places didnt ask for a copy of the marriage certificate. I did my credit cards online.

Strangely, one of my bank accounts was changed before I went there to change it. I told the woman that I wanted to change my name on the account, and she told me it was already done. Very bizarre...I have no idea how that happened.

Okay, thanks, ladies!

If any other married ladies have thoughts on this, feel free to comment! I am so clueless about this whole 'name-changing' thing LOL!

i'm starting the process now.

i don't think there's harm in doing it early if FH lives there already....i'm just superstitious and wouldn't feel comfortable using my new name yet.

great question, I have not even thought about that ! FH & I already live together and we have 2 months until the wedding still so I guess I'll start with the bills that come in after the wedding just in case they ask for proof.

FH and I are going tonight to get our marriage license. Does anyone know if I can make a bunch of copies of that to show as proof, or are they not really 'official' til the Deacon and others sign them at the wedding? Just curious!

You can't change your name until you are legally married. You will need to first change your soc sec number then you can change all the bills to the married name. Don't get stressed because it is a long and difficult process. I recently was divorced and changed a lot back to the maiden name but gave up so up I am waiting to change everything to the married name. It is time consuming. Call each company and ask them what info they need and if and where you can fax the info and/or mail it. It is not normally the address on the bills. With the car, you need to change the title and make sure that the reg-license and insurance match perfectly-all of which you will be charged a fee. You need to go in person to the banks and fill out paperwork.

Re: Question about when to start changing name/address on bills

I am just about done changing my name now too and I would wait to use your new name until it is offical, I'm talking about changed with social security and DMV. My DH and I bought our house 2 weeks after the wedding but before I 'legally changed' my name and I had to buy the house as my maiden name bc just bc you are married doesn't mean your name is now suddenly your husbands. Lots of people never change it. So, your really not suppose to use your married name until you change it with social security. Oh, and I know that if a bill is in your married name but your bank is your maiden - that can cause headaches to. My advice, don't use the new name until its offical and change everything at one time. HTH
