Married Ladies or Anyone that might have advice...
Has anyone had to fly with their wedding dress??
I live and bought my dress in LA. We are flying to New York in a few weeks for our wedding! I refuse to ship my dress, I can't part with it.
Does anyone have any tips on travelling with the dress?? My salon said to ask to board early and lay it flat in the overhead bin and shut it but if anyone has been on an LAX - > JFK flight, you know those flights are packed! I called the airline and they told me to 'hold my dress.' Um, the dress bag is so large it could easily have it's own seat! Plus it is a 6 hr flight. I think i'm stressing for no reason...but I still want to be prepared.

I'm also in LA (where I bought my dress) and flying it with me to JFK. I'm planning on carrying it on and asking the flight attendants to hang it up for me. That's what multiple people have told me to do. What airline are you flying?

never gone coast-to-coast, but I have traveled with fairly large BM dresses- and they hang it up for me in the first-class section (as long as there is room in their *special* closet). I spoke with the airline also, and they were not helpful- but the gate crew, and flight attendants helped. Just be super sweet, and get there early and talk to the gate people.

What airline are you taking? A lot of times, even if you are flying coach, they will let your gown fly in the first class closet. Everyone loves a bride, they will work with you!

Where in LA are you? :)
I'm flying Virgin America...the flight attendants are normally super nice...so hopefully they will help!

Thanks Everyone! I'm hoping that people, the airlines, the airport, etc, will just be very nice and helpful that morning. We also travel with our dog, so our hands will be quite full!

I had this issue!!
I bought my dress in FL where I live...and had the dilemma of getting it to NY. I opted to have it shipped 6 months before the wedding (just in case it got lost/damaged in transit), so it could be replaced and be ready in time. I heard from alot of people you can 'hang it up' in the plane, and after speaking with a few airlines, thats not always possible. That's only available IF its not already in use by flight attendents. (and it would need to not be a super puffy dress to fit in the space they would give you). I was told that I could buy a seat for it but security would need to check it out. I didn't want anyone opening up my dress and messing it up, so there went the flying idea!
I shipped it UPS after many sleepless nights and it arrived perfect!
