one of my guy friends is looking to get engaged and knows his girlfriend wants a princess cut diamond but he hates them and wants to get a round one ...
did any of you get a diamond that was a different shape than you were hoping for? were you disappointed? did you do anything about it?
thanks

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
Why doesn't he just get what she wants and avoid whatever might happen? :

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
why can't he get her a princess cut just cause he doesnt like it? she's gonna be the one wearing it lol.
i only told my DH that i wanted a princess cut and i let him pick out the setting. i still wanted some element of surprise and he did a great job!

What if he gets round with a 4 prong setting so it looks more square?

i just asked him ... his response was 'no, i'm gonna stick with round cuz that's safer'
(not sure what 'safer' means - asking now)

I would do this, it's a great compromise. But if he wants a happy marriage or even just a yes, get her what she wants.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
awwww, I really would try to get her what she wants. It's one thing if he's getting her a DIFFERENT square shaped diamond like an ascher or radiant but one of my friends HATES round shapes period.
If his FW had voiced her wants, I'd really wish he'd respect that! She is the one to wear it after all!
Sidenote: I had wanted ascher but FH went with radiant after seeing both cuts in the setting. I was very happy with it and think he made a great choice! I'll admit I would've been surprised if he went with round since I had told him I preferred square/rectangular and he asked me about diamond cuts.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
I had always said I wanted princess, but I tried one on and it did not look good on my finger. my suggestion is to tell them to try on some rings and see what style looks best on her.
if not, he might as well get her what she wants, it's gonna be sitting on her finger, not his.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
i got the one i wanted and i happen to think most diamond shapes are beautiful, but $hit would hit the fan if i got something i didn't like after i told him what i wanted. i mean isn't the proposal about making me happy. why spend all that money to disappoint??

I would get her what she wants. She might be really disappointed if he doesnt and I'm sure he doesnt want that.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
tell me about it ... he's driving me crazy
he said that the two of them sometimes have differences in opininos about things ... but that he's usually the one to be 'right' in the end (she changes her opinion after seeing things in person) ... so he thinks that she'll change her mind about the diamond shape too.
he also says that princess cuts are not as sparkly as round so he doesn't want to 'waste money' on something not shiny
this guy's gonna drive me to drink!

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds
I didnt know what I wanted. But he surprised me with a Princess Cut and I love it. It is also really sparkely so i would tell him it is not the shape that makes it sparkle it is the quality.
But he should def get her what she wants. I dont think i could marry someone who is already saying she knows he is always right.
No offense.
