question for a friend about rings & diamonds

Original post by AwaitingAugust

one of my guy friends is looking to get engaged and knows his girlfriend wants a princess cut diamond but he hates them and wants to get a round one ...

did any of you get a diamond that was a different shape than you were hoping for? were you disappointed? did you do anything about it?

thanks

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds

DH & I never spoke about e-rings & I am completely suprised when he proposed. He picked out the exact ring I always wanted.
When I asked him how he knew (since I never told anyone), he said that he knew what I would like & since he was spending his money, he wanted to get something he also liked. So while I am very happy that I have a ring I love, I also believe that the fact that he is happy with his investment is just as important.

In your friends case, it sounds like the best bet would be for them to go shopping & have her try on some different rings & see what looks best.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds

I got exactly the cut I wanted, an emerald cut - also happens to be the cut FH liked best when we went to look out rings, so I guess I lucked out there.

For your friend, he should really listen to the girl....shame on him if he doesn't.

I don't know if money is a concern for your friend, but every single jeweler I went to told me that round stones cost a lot more money than a fancy cut, so maybe that will help convince him to get the Princess.

And he thinks Princess isn't sparkly? I have an emerald cut, which is the least sparkly, and mine is very sparkly, so I'm sure the Princess will be very sparkly.

Everyone told me to get a round ring but my heart was set on a princess and that's what I got and I love it.
If FH got me a round ring KNOWING I really wanted a princess then yes.. i'd be disappointed. If he didn't know then no.

i got what i asked for,and i would tell him to the same. iv seen it being in the business and all and its not a good thing when she wants something and he gets something else. we dream about our rings like we dream about our wedding,\. shes gunna have it for the rest of her life.

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds

My only stipulation was that I NOT get a round diamond and I prferred princess, but I would let him pick out the ring. He got me what I wanted. Honestly, the setting isn't exactly what I was wishing for or what I was showing him as examples of what I loved, I wanted baguettes instead of princess cut diamonds int he band, but my ring is still amazing... it wouldn't have been, however, if he'd gottenme a round cut diamond. I'd have been upset.

Also, someone said the jewelers were telling her that the round is more expensive? FH was told the opposite, that he'd get more bang for his buck if he got round because of the way it's cut, the same weight appears larger... a couple places int he diamond district told him that but he said no, JAmie wants Princess and that's what I'm getting... awwww

Anyway, tell him he's setting himself up for disaster if he doesn't get what she wants... does he really want to start his life with her by essentially telling her what she wants doesn't matter? Isn't this about her?

i totally agree with all of you but he seems to have stopped listening to me now ... so whatever - let him deal with her disappointment if / when he gets the wrong diamond.

unfortunately, i can't FORCE him to do what we all agree is the right thing.

as someone who gotten a 2nd (or 3rd depending on how u look at it) ering I can say that listening to the girl is the most important thing.

I told my DH I didnt want a stone that sits on top, I want the one that sits inside the setting as I hate looking like a princess - he didnt listen, I said I wanted more of a art deco design - he didnt listen (or already got what he liked before)
I did get the ring I wanted in the end
LOL

Why doesn't he just get what she wants and avoid whatever might happen? :

he doesn't seem to be listening to me ... i'm trying to convince him to get her what she wants!

He's insane. Just get her what she wants. She'll be so disappointed if it's not the cut she wants. I mean that is the easiest part!!!

Does anyone remember the Sex and the City episode where Aidan is going to purpose and Carrie finds the ring and its soooooo UGLY? She makes a valid point that if a man can't pick out a piece jewerly that a woman loves they shouldn't get married

Re: question for a friend about rings & diamonds

I had wanted a cushion cut - ala the Tiffany NOVO style ring - and i had pointed it out on the T&Co website, but I do remember him looking at the classic solitaire telling me, 'Thats what I think the perfect engagement ring looks like...'

Lo and behold, I have my perfect brilliant cut round diamond solitaire engagement ring, and truth be told, i'm glad that my fiance put as much thought and consideration into it as he did. I love my ring

Just tell him to get her what she wants.

And when he requests for her to get him a replica of one of Liberace's outfits, I'm sure she'll get him what he wants.
