Question for all the gym nuts

Question for all the gym nuts

So me and FH are going to join a gym. We've said this for the past 2 years and never did. The last time we went, using a guest pass, I went on the treadmill and then a bike. We were there maybe like 1 1/2. When I came home I literally felt like I was hit by a truck lol. I was in pain for like 2 days, I know sad. I only want to tone up really, maybe loose 5 pounds. I can only go on the weekends, tops 3 times a week. What machines should I use and how long should I start going for?

the elliptical and bike are your best best. They will tone your legs up for and give you a good cardio w/o. The thing is don't just do it to do it; Push beyond your limit. The elliptical typically has programs on it that you can use to push yourself.

the other thing you will need to do is free weights. Do squats, lunges, dead lifts, bicep curls etc. Hiring a trainer for a quick lesson is a good idea too!

Re: Question for all the gym nuts

That was a lot to do for your first time being there.

I normally use the treadmill or eliptical for 2 miles (about 15 minutes) first just as a warm up. Then I always do abs and depending on the day I switch between using weights on the upper and lower body. Try that and if you wanna use ur legs try the leg press machiene.

If you join a gym you might get a free trial with a trainer who can set a routine for you.

Hmm..really. I have lots of parks by me. I'd have to buy a bike then. Is it gonna be too cold out soon though?

if you just want to tone up why not just get a sculpting dvd that you can do at home?

i loveeee the gym. i could be there all day. A trainer once told me if you do the right things, you dont have to be there for longer than an hour.

I do 5 min. warm up
20-30 mins on the treadmill or arc trainer (depending on my mood). i always run on an incline on the treadmill
then abs
then the machines. i mix up which machines i use.

im usually only there like an hour because i never have time anymore.

Re: Question for all the gym nuts

it's hard to just get on a treadmill and run for the first time without reprecussions... and it helps a lot to stretch after.

i love the bike the most and elliptical is also good, stair machine is hard but effective

i would also recommend lifting a few days a week

Re: Question for all the gym nuts

My surgeon benched me last September BUT before that I would pick one muscle group and strength train for a half hour and then do an hour of cardio after. After that I'd sit in the sauna for a bit. 2 hrs at the gym 4-5x/ wk isn't awful.

I do the gym 3-4 times a week (really, more like 3). Two days I do a all-body cardio and strength classes - which are good to get into. The other two days I do cardio for 30 minutes (either step machine, elliptical, treadmill, it depends on my mood) and then 30 minutes of abs and weights. Weights I alternate either upper body one day, lower body another day OR I do chest, shoulders, triceps one day and then back, legs and biceps another day. These muscle groups work best together, for me.

Re: Question for all the gym nuts

Definitely do a few sessions with a personal trainer. You usually get a few free when you join a gym. What I liked about working with a trainer is that he showed me moves that do not require much equipment, like planks, push ups, squats, lunges. Just a dumbell or two or a medicine ball.

I usually start off with some cardio, usually eliptical or bike since I run outisde (3-4 miles 3-4x a week). And then I do strength training. Sometimes I'll take a boot camp class.

It's also important to find a gym that you like and feel comfortable at. Otherwise you'll just find excuses not to go.

Quick question---when you girls say 'weights', what do you mean exactly?

I do the elliptical and machines (arms & legs) but I'm looking to add more so I can tone up more.
