Question for Catholic Brides

If you have or if you will be getting married in a parish that is not yours, Did you have to write a letter to your church asking permission to get married in the other church? And if you did, what did you say?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe you just need to get your pariash to send proof of sacaraments to the parish youre getting married in. This is pretty common, Don't forget that usually at least one person in the couple doens't belong to the parish! Good luck

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

I moved 5 years ago and wanted to get married in my old church, so when I went to book the church, the only place that gave me problems was my old church. I didn't have to get a letter from my new parish. You do have to get a copy of your baptism certificate for the church you are getting married in. To be able to get married in my old church I had to show them proof that my grandmother still belonged to that parish and I was once a member. It was so frustrating.

My FH is not part of my parish so we had to get a Freedom to Marry letter from his parish and his baptismal cert came from another parish all together.

How do they know which parish you belong too? We don't go to church very often....

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

If you don't go to church, I think its the town you live in.

The church in DH's town was getting renovated at the time we were getting married, so he had to get a letter from them saying that to bring to the church we did get married in.

We didnt have to write a letter but we had to pay $100 extra on top of the regular fee.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

My FH's family belongs to St Martin. Its a tradition in their family that everyone get married at that church. So when we went for the interview, they told us we couldnt get married there because it wasnt out parish . Anyway, FH explained to them he had been going to that church since he was a child. They said since he moved to lindenhurst he wasnt considered a member, but that all he had to do was go to his local parish and get that letter. Even though we had NEVER attended church in lindenhurst, they consider us members since we live in that town. Easily enough, we went the parish in lindenhurst, explained our situation. and the priest jotted down a small note on church stationary stating we were free to marry at St Martin's.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

Generally, the parish you live in will ask you to register with them when you move there. Most people don't know this, so if you are not registered, I think they generally look at your address to determine if you are in the parish or not.

We didn't have to, but I have heard of this. Just explain what your reasons are.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

I just had to go to my parish anf they gave me a from letter that they filled out. Then I have to bring in a copy of my baptismal cerfiticate that shows that Ihave received all of the sacraments. No big deal!

My FH had to provide a copy of his baptismal certificate, 1st Communion, other Sacraments taken, AND a 'Letter of Freedom.' The Letter of Freedom is a letter from the priest saying that you have not married in the past in the Church.

I didn't know about the letter but the priest said that later he would need proof that he did all of his sacraments

Re: Question for Catholic Brides

FH and I are getting married at a local church that is not mine nor his (he lives in nj) parish. All the priest wanted was our baptismal certificates. He didn't ask for anythig else or a larger 'donation'. The donation is high enough so I was greatful for that.
